Derivational grammar of the various Germanic languages

This book is thorough in its coverage of the derivational laws that turned Indo-European words into the Indo-European vocabulary of the Germanic languages. To find interest here, you will not only have to have a fairly solid background in Indo-European linguistics; you will also need to be familiar with the abstract shorthand used by historical linguists, as it is omnipresent in this book.
As a treatment of these topics, it is thorough and comprehensive. It is silent, though, on the question of whether there is a substantial non-Indo-European element in the Germanic languages, and the relationship of any "substrate," if it in fact exists, to the sound changes it records. There is also minimal attempt made here to analyse relationships between the various Germanic languages, even though the book records similar sound changes appearing independently among the different languages of the family. Some nod to the existence of these subjects for debate would have made this a better book.

A unique reference work unlike others out there

No other academic volume covers the different eras of Germanic grammar more completely nor more succinctly than Professor Voyles'. He comprehensively treats nominal/adjectival declension, pronominal declension, and verb conjugation and addresses some long-standing controversies. He does not believe for instance, that there were two long-e vowels in Germanic (e1 and e2); rather, he demonstrates how they are both derivative of the same long-e in Indo-European and how they were pronounced identically in Germanic times. Any historical linguist would do well to start with this singular volume.

Why map of Germany?

I did not read this book, but I am quite into historical linguistics, to say the least; and I feel rather appalled at the cover of the book. It is a map of Germany! Why should that be so? It is confusing enough that the word "Germanic" has "German" in it... But the German language itself strayed early on from Germanic when it underwent the Old High German consonant shift. German is not especially or in any way quintessentially Germanic! Otto Jespersen suggested using "Gothonic;" but, in contrast, with the word "Germanic" appearing here within a map of Germany, the nail has been hammered into the confusion-wound that the word "Germanic" is.

Take the map away!!! Replace it with Denmark if you need to show just one country, hehe...

In any case, based on the reviews and subject matter, I bet this book is AWESOME! That is why I give it 5 stars even without having read it. It reeks AWESOMEness. Just remove the map of Germany, ok?

Events in relation to the world environment at that time.

W. Montgomery Watt wrote Muhammad at Mecca in response to his perceived need for a new look at the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) set in a fuller historical context. He states that part of this need arose from the broader desire of twentieth century historians to see historical events in relation to the economic, social, and political background prevalent at that particular time. The author asserts that the special feature of this biography of Muhammad is thus not that it combs available sources more minutely than others have done previously, but that it pays fuller attention to these material factors, and attempts to answer many questions that have hardly been raised in the past. When this work is juxtaposed with Watt's other work Muhammad at Medina, the two together constitute a comprehensive history of the life of Muhammad and the origins of the Islamic community. The author declares in the introduction of this work that it is first and foremost written for the historian. He warns though that there is inherently the human inclination of 'tendential shaping' by early historians to make allowances for distortions or even to make it more acceptable within the shadow of other religions such as Christianity or Judaism. Though many bibliographic sources used for this work are based on earlier primary sources, one must remember that there are no known written sources other than the Qur'an about the life of the Prophet written prior to about 150 years after his death.

A rare and objective account

Muhammed at Mecca is a remarkable volume that covers the first part of the prophet of Islam and the early days of his young nation prior to 622 CE, the year of Hijra when Muhammed left Mecca to Medina which also marks the first year of the Muslim calander. With much skill and ability to retrodict events and put them in their historical context, Watt offers this book as one of the most authentic works on the subject.

The volume is an academic work and might not appeal to all kinds of readers save for academics and those who are very interested in the subject. Watt employs the modern methodology in classifying, crediting and discrediting almost all of the primary sources of the time. Watt then objectively treats these sources and draws conclusions that a reader can rarely find in other places.

His gifted style helped a great deal in making a lengthy volume full of details entertaining for the reader and rather catchy. Those who are interested in reading about the whole story of Muhammed and his mission should also buy Watt's second volume, Mohammed at Medina, which covers his post Hijra years until his death in 632.

Too bad the book is out-of-print. Publishers should consider marketing a second edition since it would certainly deserve the attention and interest of many scholars and readers today.

The only valid biography about Muhammad and Islam is by Ibn Ishaq, whose remarkable book was censored by Ibn Hisham. The English translation is The Life of Muhammad by Guillaume, who made the fatal mistake of using the title God for Allah, and so misses the most vitally important point of Islam.
Tabari used Ishaq's original uncensored text for his History.
Read them both, with the relevant Hadith, traditional stories by Bukhari and Muslim.
Muhammad was the messenger of Allah, not God.
In Arabic, the Qur'an and Sharia, Almighty God is Ilah and Allah is ‘the god’ in English.
In Arabic and the Qur'an, God/Ilah is Al-Rahman, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious.
These years in Mecca are extremely interesting, because Muhammad invoked Ilah, Ar Rahman, as well as Allah the pagan god of Arabia. Muhammad faced the sacred place of Jerusalem while praying, in honour of Abraham. During these years most of the chapters and verses are in the name of Ilah. In his last years in Mecca he began invoking only Allah as his one god. The final invocation in the name of Ilah occurred in the first year at Yathrib [Medina] in chapter 2. From then on only the name of Allah was invoked.

Great book for understanding just what Mark and Miles are doing. I got this one and 'Blackbird'. The music of Alterbridge takes on a different meaning when looking at in Tab or notation form. Both of these books and the Mark Tremonti instructional DVD have helped greatly in becoming a better player. Great books..Great band!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR\

Ann Cecil-Sterman, MS, L.Ac, is the author of the internationally acclaimed book, Advanced Acupuncture: A Clinic Manual, a required text in many acupuncture schools in the United States and widely read in Europe and Australia. She travels all over the world to teach the application and methodology of the Complement Channels, the art of pulse diagnosis, and the use of food as medicine. For many years she taught Advanced Clinical Observation and was a senior clinic supervisor at the school of acupuncture founded by Dr Jeffrey Yuen in 1997 in New York City.  She is a long-time student of Dr Yuen, having extensively studied acupuncture, diet, Chinese medical history, herbs, qigong, essential oils, stones and philosophy with him across North America. Ann was Director of the Classical Wellness Center in Manhattan where for many years she practiced and taught classes on advanced diagnosis and the theory and application of Classical Chinese Medicine. Currently, her patients—children and adults of all ages—come from all over the world, working through illnesses or on personal cultivation. This is a wonderful work. Ann Cecil-Sterman has been writing methodical clinical manuals assembled from her study of the oral tradition of Jeffrey Yuen and her own busy practice. This time, she focuses upon the topic of pulse diagnosis. She is clear and concise, providing a detailed approach to this method. The images contained herein elucidate many areas that have long proven to be confusing for learners. Her years of work on these oral transmissions is to be commended. This book should occupy an easily reachable place on every acupuncturist's bookshelf. In my earlier review of “Dynamic Pulses,” a extremely thin book describing dynamic pulse-taking, I noted that the author was working on a much larger exposition of pulses. At long last it is here! When I was in Pacific College of Oriental Medicine at NY’s student clinic our supervisor Dr. Jonathan Daniel would always take the time to explain the many nuances of pulse-taking on each patient. I will never forget the excitement we all shared the day he rushed us over to his side of the table to feel a Leather Pulse. So, the first page I sought out in this intriguing book was the section on the Leather Pulse and I was not disappointed.

This is the book we might have wished we had in school except back then there would never have been any time to digest it all. Cecil-Sterman starts with a review of the Classical Approach of feeling levels of the pulse, moves on to present in a new light the 28+ TCM pulses we mindlessly memorized for our national exams, and then opens up the whole world of Directional Pulses and Organ Communication that nicely complements the new interest in the Eight Extra Meridians and Divergent Channels as demonstrated by the recent flurry of books on these Classical Acupuncture protocols. This is the pulse-taking book we now have the time to explore. And it is time well spent. “The Art of Pulse Diagnosis" is a book to reflect on between patients and to be savored in small chunks. And best of all Cecil-Sterman has a writing style that flows smoothly from thought to thought.

valuable and beautifully written book from cover to cover

If I could give this book 100 stars, I definitely would! A few moments ago, I finished reading this thorough, informative, thoughtful, valuable and beautifully written book from cover to cover. I imagine I will be digesting it for years to come. This book is a true gift that Cecil-Sterman has given to us as practitioners and laymen about the wisdom found within the pulses. The paintings she shares with us give life and feeling to the pulses that words can't solely describe. In my practice, As a TCM trained practitioner, I have found that the diagnostics found in this book have been making my classical treatments that much more effective. The directional pulse taking in itself is crucial knowledge that all practitioners should know. Ann describes directional pulse taking in depth here, along with shedding light on the basic 28 pulses acupuncturists learn in school. Each day I am in practice I apply little bits and pieces of the knowledge I have gained from her book and I imagine this book will continue to be indispensable in my practice. A must must must buy for any acupuncturist to deepen your knowledge of pulse taking! So important.
