This book by the award-winning historian of medicine Nancy Leys Stepan is an accessible, beautifully written, and deeply researched examination of one of the most controversial issues in public health today. The eradication of disease might seem like an absolute good. But critics of eradication argue that the huge resources needed to achieve eradication could be better allocated toward developing primary health services and general improvement in health.

This book aims to look at the benefits and drawbacks of single-minded efforts to rid the world of particular diseases, one at a time. The sweep of the book is impressive, from the origins of the idea of complete eradication in the early twentieth century until the present-day campaigns against polio, Guinea worm disease, and now malaria. The author places eradication's story in its many contexts, from imperialism, changing notions of public health, the history of medicine and its technologies, the development of international health agencies such as the World Health Organization, and the impact of the Cold War on the shift of attention to disease in developing countries.

At the center of this narrative is Dr. Fred Lowe Soper (1893–1977), a U.S.-trained doctor who became the arch-eradicationist of his time. His campaigns to eradicate hookworm disease, yaws, yellow fever, malaria, and smallpox are treated in compelling detail, as are the roles of international health agencies such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the World Health Organization.

Throughout the book Stepan draws attention to the way that the ideal of eradication has repeatedly arisen, phoenix-like, from its setbacks. In a powerful conclusion, she uses the example of the current campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease to argue that, today, under the right circumstances, eradication and primary health care need not be in conflict, as they were in the past, but can form mutually reinforcing policies to improve the health and well-being of populations, especially the poorest and most disease-burdened populations of the world.

Eradication: Ridding the World of Diseases Forever?

The book provides a historic approach to attempts to eradicate certain diseases. It points out the pitfalls of too much confidence and too little scientific information. Students of International Public Health will find the book informative and a good read. Those already in the field can reminisce. I am part of the latter as I met a number of the scientists mentioned in the book. I was at the convention where the two societies of tropical medicine joined to become one. Many of the graduate students and young professionals were told to avoid careers in malaria as it would soon be eradicated. Many of us followed the advice and selected other fields only to spend our careers working on malaria, yellow fever, denque, etc. This adds proof to her observations on eradication. She does a good job identifying the problems and solutions of disease control and/or eradication.

The story is balanced between progress and failure of programs It demonstrates the power of personalities whether right or wrong. I believe in some places she was a little unfair in her views of the Rockefeller staff. Even in failure their accomplishments were considerable and their work laid a foundation for many other groups that have tried to solve problems in the tropics. I noted that the writer did not give much credit to the Carter Center for their work in eradication of diseases. They are usuing a more modern approach and making outstanding progress.

As one who has worked with many of the diseases mentioned, I found it an enjoyable read and a chance to meet old friends as their names appear in the book. A book written in the 1930s called
"An American Doctors Odyssey' introduced me to the adventure of international public health and I think this book has the capacity to do the same for the present seekers of a career in health.

This is the CSE standard for writing reports and articles in science!

I am a professor at a small public liberal arts university and teach courses in a Biology department. We have a writing-across-the-curriculum program that involves intermediate and advanced levels of writing pertinent to the student's major. This book is the standard for style and formatting for most science journals and is published by the Council of Science Editors (CSE). As such, this book documents fully the standards for journal articles which are the models for laboratory reports in science courses for higher education. Our department uses two other books to introduce the CSE style to students (authored by J. Pechenik and K. Knisely), but for faculty, this is the REAL DEAL textbook for science authors. It comprehensively covers more than just in-text and end-material citations of literature, but also standards for abbreviations, SI units, graphics, statistical analysis, vocabulary, etc. with chapters covering special issues for subdisciplines within the sciences. Every professor teaching writing to science undergraduate or graduate students should have a desk copy of this manual and every college/university library should have a copy in its reference department. HIGHLY recommended! MLA and APA are the standards for other disciplines; CSE is for science.

Useful resource for clients and therapists

As a therapist learning to use mindfulness- and acceptance-based behavioral therapies, I find this book to be an extremely useful resource for my clients, and personally. It is a helpful way for clients to read and reflect on topics discussed in treatment. It is also a fantastic reminder for myself as therapist, in terms of incorporating these principles into my own life. Thank you!

From anxious avoidance to mindful living

When feeling anxious, do you typically:
1) Become so consumed with how anxious you feel and then harshly judge yourself for doing so?
2) Do whatever you can to escape feeling the anxiety?
3) Try to avoid whatever triggers the anxiety?

If so, this book will likely change your world--from the inside out. It's not about changing your anxiety, but about changing the relationship you have with your internal experience of anxiety and the associated uncomfortable emotions. And, the first step to changing this relationship is to understand these truths that the authors have discovered from years of research and their own clinical and personal experiences:
--Anxiety is universal, adaptive, and functional
--Anxious thoughts and associated emotions do not necessarily your control behavior
--Trying to control (or avoid) your anxiety typically causes more distress

Once you've grasped these truths, you'll be ready to start embracing the concept of mindfulness. In contrast to anxiety which narrows attention and focuses on threats, mindfulness expands our attention and helps us more fully engage in our lives. As the authors explain, the goal of mindfulness is "to change the relationship you have with your thoughts and feelings, to bring some curiosity and compassion to the responses you have, to learn to tune in to your emotions and understand how they pull you to respond in certain ways, and to being some flexibility and choice to the actions you have." (p. 166)

The practice of mindfulness revolves around the three steps of observation, curiosity, and self-compassion, and ultimately allows you to: increase your present-moment focus and clarify your awareness; turn towards your emotions (instead of running from them or trying to control them); and make valued choices to help you live a full meaningful life.

So, if you're tired of being a prisoner of your anxiety, here is your chance to break free. Imagine being able to make choices based on wants instead of fears! And, after reading this book, you'll be able to transform that fantasy into reality.

Wow! Finally!

All I can say is, its about time! Ok honestly, I had never thought a merman romance, so when I came across this one I took the the chance. ....I don't regret it at all. I like the overall reading experience from it. It wasn't like any normal supernatural romance I had read before. It was told from BOTH point of views and not just one. This book also had me laughing out loud over the some the things the merman says and thinks. Would I recommend it to my friends to read? Yes, it was good.

The little mermaid never looked so good...

I haven't reviewed many books on amazon but that just proves how much I enjoyed this one. I LOVED this book! The romance was good, the sex was steamy, and the story line was interesting... basically it was a really great read.

The book starts off with Oren, the merman of the story, picking out one of the humans of a shipwreck to be his dinner... and yeah he ate the guy... so yeah... not your everyday, sweet, 'I just wanna meet my prince!' mermaid. When Oren is sent on a mission by the elders of his cove he is captured and taken to a human lab to be studied. There Oren meets Adam, a sweet scientist who just happens to smell so good Oren decides 'what the heck, let's make him mine.' The story goes on from there but I won't spoil the book by continuing any further. Just read if you wanna know more.

As far as the romance of the story goes it's pretty intense and a bit fast paced but what do you expect, one of them was 'doped' up. ;) The writing was very smooth and flowed nicely. It also didn't have as many grammatical errors as a lot of the MM romances I have read. Overall I'd have to say that this is an awesome book and one of the my favorite MM books yet. The only thing I have to say against it is I wish it had been longer. 100+ pages isn't a bad length what-so-ever but I liked it so much I didn't want it to end. Here's to hoping Jana Downs will make it into a series!
