Here's Flo Kennedy, "radicalism's rudest mouth," telling her life story in full and for the first time. Raised in Kansas City in the twenties, she was one of five sisters, the daughter of a father who stood off the Ku Klux Klan with a shotgun and a mother who taught them always to hold out for the best.

One of the first Black women to graduate from Columbia Law School, she went on to represent Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker. In the sixties she was a delegate to the Black Power conferences, then took up the battle against sexism and racism by founding the Media Workshop, the Feminist Party, and the Coalition Against Racism and Sexism. She was a member of the legal team which was instrumental in liberalizing the New York State abortion laws, and was co-author of Abortion Rap.

She has mastered guerilla warfare tactics on the picket line and in the streets and suites of New York. Her verbal karate has provoked and entertained TV audiences internationally. Now in COLOR ME FLO the inimitable Flo Kennedy makes her case to the reader.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dorothy “Dottie” Kamenshek was only nine years old when her father died of pneumonia. An only child, she was encouraged by her mother to stay active during the day while her mother worked. Dottie filled her time playing baseball with the other neighborhood boys and girls. She enjoyed the game and became very good at it. She dreamed of becoming a nurse for the US Army, but World War II was raging, and Dottie’s mother wouldn’t let her enlist while the United States was at war. The war affected every area of people’s lives, including how they spent their leisure time. By the fall of 1942, many minor league baseball teams were forced to disband because so many young men had been drafted into the armed services. There was concern that the war might continue, and Major League Baseball parks across the country would face financial collapse. In 1943, Philip Wrigley, the owner of Wrigley’s Chewing Gum and the Chicago Cubs, was looking for a way to keep the baseball parks in business. He founded the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). The League sent out scouts and set up tryouts in dozens of major cities. Hundreds of women from all over the USA and Canada tried out to play in the new league. Of these, only 280 were invited to the final tryouts in Chicago, where sixty were chosen to become the first women ever to play professional baseball. Dottie’s exceptional skills were noticed by a scout for the AAGPBL when she was seventeen years old. She was one of thirty girls from her area who won a chance to try out at Wrigley Field in Chicago. She was chosen for the League and became a member of the Rockford Peaches team, representing Rockford, Illinois. A left-handed first-base player, Dottie played ten seasons for the AAGPBL. She became the AAGPBL’s all-time leader in hits and total bases run and played on the All-Star Team all seven times an All-Star team was created. She was the League’s top batter in 1946 and 1947. Dottie suffered a knee injury that required physical therapy. This experience led her to become a physical therapist after her baseball career ended. She also suffered a back injury, which eventually led to her retirement; she played her last season of baseball wearing a back brace in 1954. In the AAGPBL, the players were required to appear feminine at all times. Mr. Wrigley was concerned that he would have trouble promoting female baseball in conservative parts of the country if the players did not uphold this rule. The players had to abide by a code of appearance that required them to wear skirts and makeup to play baseball. No boyish haircuts were allowed whatsoever, and players were not to be seen in shorts or pants. All social functions had to be approved by the League’s chaperones. In addition, each player had to attend charm school. The female players were expected to follow this simple rule: “Look like women. Play like men.” Women’s League players earned $50-$100 each week. This was not enough to pay for physical therapy school, so Dottie also worked at a bakery to put herself through Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After gaining work experience in Ohio, Dottie moved to Los Angeles, California and began working at the Los Angeles County Crippled Children’s Services Department. She eventually became their director and supervised over 100 physical therapists. After her retirement in 1980, she was honored by Los Angeles County with an award for outstanding management. Later in life, she was recognized in the 1992 movie A League of Their Own. Dottie Hinson, the character played by Geena Davis was loosely based on Dottie Kamenshek. She was honored again in 1999, when Sports Illustrated named her one of the 100 greatest female athletes of all time. Dottie died in May of 2010, having lived a very fulfilling life.

About the Author

William J. Vincent, EdD, is currently an adjunct professor and is the former director of the general education wellness program in the department of exercise sciences at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He is professor emeritus and former chair of the department of kinesiology at California State University at Northridge. He was employed at CSUN for 39 years and taught statistics and measurement theory for 35 of those years. In 1995 he received the University Distinguished Teaching Award.

Dr. Vincent has been a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance since 1964. In 2007, he received the AAHPERD National Honor Award for distinguished service to the profession. He has served as the president of the Southwest District of AAHPERD and was a member of the AAHPERD Board of Governors from 1993 to 1995. In 1988 he was named the Southwest District Scholar and delivered the keynote address titled "From Means to Manova" at the 1989 convention.

Dr. Vincent is the author or coauthor of 4 books and more than 70 professional articles. Fifty-one of those articles appeared in refereed journals, including Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, the International Journal of Sports Medicine, and the Journal of Athletic Training. He has a bachelor’s degree in physical education (pedagogy), a master’s degree in physical education (exercise physiology), and a doctorate in educational psychology (perception and learning), all from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Vincent and his wife, Diana, live in Lindon, Utah, and have 6 children and 20 grandchildren. In his free time, Dr. Vincent enjoys camping, snow skiing and water skiing, conducting genealogical research, and reading.

Joseph P. Weir, PhD, is a professor in the doctor of physical therapy program at Des Moines University in Iowa. He earned his doctorate in exercise physiology from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Dr. Weir is a fellow of both the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He was given the NSCA President’s Award in 2007 and its William J. Kraemer Outstanding Sport Scientist Award in 2006. He served as president of the National Strength and Conditioning Association Foundation from 2006 to 2009, and he was cochair of the ACSM’s Biostatistics Interest Group from 2001 to 2003.

Dr. Weir is the associate editor of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, and he is a member of the editorial board of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. He is the author of numerous research articles, which have appeared in journals including European Journal of Applied Physiology, Physiological Measurement, American Journal of Physiology, and the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. He is coauthor of Physical Fitness Laboratories on a Budget, and he has contributed chapters to seven texts, including NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training.

Dr. Weir is originally from Glennallen, Alaska. He and his wife, Loree, live near Des Moines, Iowa, and have three children. Dr. Weir is an avid motorcyclist and fan of University of Nebraska football.

Great for undergrads

It's a great book for beginners. It covers most areas of stats that you will come across in kinesiology. It doesn't provide enough detail or depth, however. By itself it's more than sufficient for undergrads, but falls short for grad students. Perhaps, ok for Master's level, but I would add other readings.

A very concise, well presented and easy to read book outlining the statistics utilised in this type of research. Thoroughly recommend, particularly for those who struggle with the dry read of stats or for those who are just embarking on this type of research.

About the Author
Ray H. Garrison is emeritus Professor of Accounting at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Brigham Young University and his D.B.A. degree from Indiana University. As a certified public accountant, Professor Garrison has been involved in management consulting work with both national and regional accounting firms. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, Management Accounting, and other professional journals. Innovation in the classroom has earned Professor Garrison the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award from Brigham Young University.

Peter C. Brewer is a professor in the Department of Accountancy at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He holds a BS degree in accounting from Penn State University, an MS degree in accounting from the University of Virginia, and a PhD from the University of Tennessee. He has published 30 articles in a variety of journals including: Management Accounting Research, the Journal of Information Systems, Cost Management, Strategic Finance, the Journal of Accountancy, Issues in Accounting Education, and the Journal of Business Logistics. Professor Brewer is a member of the editorial boards of Issues in Accounting Education and the Journal of Accounting Education. His article “Putting Strategy into the Balanced Scorecard” won the 2003 International Federation of Accountants’ Articles of Merit competition and his articles “Using Six Sigma to Improve the Finance Function” and “Lean Accounting: What’s It All About?” were awarded the Institute of Management Accountants’ Lybrand Gold and Silver Medals in 2005 and 2006. He has received Miami University’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business Teaching Excellence Award and has been recognized on two occasions by the Miami University Associated Student Government for “making a remarkable commitment to students and their educational development.” He is a leading thinker in undergraduate management accounting curriculum innovation and is a frequent presenter at various professional and academic conferences.Prior to joining the faculty at Miami University, Professor Brewer was employed as an auditor for Touche Ross in the firm’s Philadelphia office. He also worked as an internal audit manager for the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He frequently collaborates with companies such as Harris Corporation, Ghent Manufacturing, Cintas, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Schneider Electric, Lenscrafters, and Fidelity Investments in a consulting or case writing capacity.

Eric W. Noreen is a globe-trotting academic who has held appointments at institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He is currently Professor of Accounting at the University of Washington and Visiting Price Waterhouse Professor of Management Information & Control at INSEAD, an international graduate school of business located in France. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Washington and MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. Satisfied and as advertised

Mines came within a couple of days with the Connect access card! The book was like new. There were some light scratches barely visible on the back hardcover. If there were no scratches and the book opens reluctantly with some creaky noise as if it is a brand new book, then I would have given it a 5 star. I checked my school bookstore but it was really overpriced. I could not settle for an eBook as my class requires Connect access.

About the Author
Gregory Dart is a Senior Lecturer in the English Department of University College London. His research, both current and prospective, is centrally concerned with the modern city, as a cultural and material phenomenon. His first monograph, Rousseau, Robespierre and English Romanticism (Cambridge, 1999), examined the influence of the French Revolution on English Romantic writers. Since then he has published widely on Romantics and the city, edited two selections of Hazlitt's writings and written a short book on the relationship between unrequited love and stalking.
