some of the personal statements in this book made me cringe, either because of something the applicant said or how bad the writing was. Suffice it to say, most of these applicants got in with their high GPA, not because of the depth in their personal essays. Since I bought this book to see examples of stellar essays, I was disappointed with the quality of writing. The tips offered before the essays weren't all that useful either--things anyone with common sense would know without having to shell out $12.

I didn't like most of the essays in this book because I didn't find their narratives compelling enough. I volunteered to give feedback on personal statements on Reddit and I found even those touched me more.

I gave this book a 3/5 star review, however, because some of these essays had great sentences I could model after. It especially helped me with syntax and flow of my own essay

So I read the older version of this (the one with the John Hopkins photo cover from 2010) and it was phenomenal!!! I'd disregard the other comments saying it's terrible, and this book tremendously helped to provide me structure for my personal statement. I'd recommend it to everyone!!!!! I'd pay $100 for this book now easily for how helpful it was for me. Really appreciative for Princeton Review for going out and making this.

About the Author
Joseph Burgo, Ph.D. has practiced psychotherapy for more than 30 years, holding licenses as a marriage and family therapist and clinical psychologist. He earned his undergraduate degree at UCLA and his masters and doctorate at California Graduate Institute in Los Angeles. He is also a graduate psychoanalyst and has served as a board member, officer and instructor at a component society of the International Psychoanalytic Association. He currently writes the popular blog "After Psychotherapy" where he discusses personal growth issues from a psychodynamic perspective.

Best self-help book I've read, by far!!

This book is amazing from every angle! Anyone who's searched through Amazon or any bookstore knows there are mountains of self-help books out there. How do you choose? As a practicing psychotherapist (and someone who's had years of my own therapy), I've tended to steer my clients away from self-help books because they usually oversimplify issues and promote unrealistic expectations which actually sabotage growth. At last, here's a self-help book I can heartily recommend to clients, friends, family, or anyone who asks! This is a one-of-a-kind book which addresses the depth and complexity of human psychology in astonishingly clear, graspable language which the everyday reader will relate to. Along with providing a pretty fascinating review of the most powerful ideas in psychoanalytic thought, it also gives the reader concrete and effective exercises that promote growth and change. And the book keeps getting better as it goes on. it ends by giving the reader a picture of what it is to be "healthy," as opposed to "perfect." Dr. Burgo goes out of his way to show the reader that a person never arrives at personal perfection. He acknowledges change is hard work, but that the rewards of getting out from under the oppression of one's defenses are well worth the effort. Likewise, you'll find this book is well worth the read!

Growth is still possible with this helpful book

As a practicing psychoanalyst, I found that this book tackles complex matters of the human condition and the workings of our minds in a highly sensitive and forthright way. It's pages are full of clear and detailed understanding of the many extraordinarily human ways we undermine our own emotional growth and instead adhere to self-deceptions. Here Dr. Burgo brings much compassion as well as a gentle but firm nudge to take any new self-understandings gleamed while reading, and with his helpful and probing questions and exercises, to actually develop in new ways. The candor and wisdom found in this well crafted and jargon free book will be an immensely useful tool for growth as an adjunct to those already in psychotherapy or for those who can not access or afford quality treatment.

Excellent Book, mediocre editing, poor numbering

As others reviewers have already said, this is a self-help book which "... addresses the depth and complexity of human psychology in astonishingly clear, graspable language which the everyday reader will relate to. Unfortunately, because of a mediocre editing and poor numbering system, those who will study this book seriously will have some difficulty in locating later on the subjects and references that interested them and would like to revise again. As a free contribution to this valuable book for those who want to study it seriously and find the numbering system too limited, I am reproducing here a more detailed Table of Content:

What a great read!

Kelley Harvey really heats up the pages in this book.
Ronnie Fitz has written a book that teaches women how to catch and keep the man of her dreams. Her best friend Shayna has a slightly different view on things. In her eyes men cheat and she can prove it. It's her job to test these guys and see just how far they'll go. Jackson Tremaine is the incredibly hot host of a late night television show. When Ronnie and Shay appear on his show a bet is made that could easily make or break their careers. Can Ronnie use the techniques in her book to find and keep the man of her dreams? Or will all bets be off after she and Jackson spend an incredibly hot night together? I absolutely loved this book. The scorching hot scenes between Ronnie & Jackson kept me turning the pages until the very end. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have read a lot of this author's books and find them to be entertaining and this one is no different. I was cracking up at Ronnie's inner voice with some of the hilarious things that went through her mind. The side characters added a bit of humor to the story and all it all it was a very entertaining book with some steamy goodness. I will be stalking her page for Shayna's story. Overall fun read and as always I look forward to more books from this author.

This story was so much fun to read. The main characters, Ronnie and Jackson, make a bet when she's on his late night television talk show, she's appearing on to promote her new book. The funny thing is the two of them are attracted to one another even with the bet, he's a confirmed bachelor to her single and looking status. There are some rather funny scenes in this book that made me chuckle. I especially LOVED the bird and it's comments. (Now you HAVE to read it just to see WTH I'm talking about)

If you are interested in this subject, you need this book. It is more than well-illustrated - there are 379 pictures, many in color, mostly of art from the period (rather than extant pieces). The text is dense with information but written in understandable English, rather than academic prose. Both pictures and text cover all kinds of obscure things never found elsewhere. It is totally worth the price - my copy is definitely well-used!

A Life Never Forgotten

In March to Freedom Edith Singer states, "When I was liberated by the Russian Army on May 8, 1945, in a small German village, I promised myself that I would not talk or think about concentration camp ever again." How fortunate the world is that she did not keep her promise. March to Freedom is an excellent read that illustrates a young woman's fight for survival through one of the darkest periods in human history.

Although the Jewish Holocaust is one of the most horrific moments in world history, it must be remembered, and the stories must be told if humanity is to learn from the past and prevent its mistakes from reoccurring.

Edith Singer demonstrates courage and strength throughout the pages of her personal memoir sharing her experiences in Auschwitz and the Taucha labor camp with explicit detail. Singer's narrative tone, personal stories, and attention to detail permit readers of all ages to experience her journey of survival. In less than one hundred pages, readers witness her unwavering dedication to life. She explains how as a young woman she fought against the Germans and maintained dignity even when they attempted to destroy her identity. When forced to receive a tattoo on her arm, she expressed, "They are de-humanizing me. I will not be a person any more, only a number. Now, I am marked just like cattle"(52). Despite the evils of humanity, Edith Singer shines as a beacon of hope, retains her faith, and encourages others to stay strong. Even when she is weak from starvation and tempted with extra food, she remains vigilant and determined to fight against the Germans by sabotaging munitions. Her example of strength and honor is expressed throughout the book and readers will learn valuable lessons from her experiences. Edith Singer's personal story of survival is an inspiration to all and should not be missed.

A True Account of the Holocaust

Sixty-three years have passed since the Germans surrendered to Allied forces in the spring of 1945, yet the horror of Nazi atrocities remains as vivid in our collective social consciousness as ever. Books written by and about concentration camp survivors continue to be relevant today, reaching into the hearts and minds of yet another generation for whom the idea of genocide seems more like something from the movies than from history.

Edith Singer is one of those clear voices bridging the past to the present. Her direct and insightful perusal of her experiences in Auschwitz strikes a strangely alarming mix of emotions within the soul. One so far removed from them by both time and political systems feels both a sense of disbelief that such inhumanity could really have occurred, and of dread that if it happened once it could very well happen again.

Ms. Singer's nearly detached observations of events that were most assuredly the stuff of nightmares, demonstrates just how deeply affected she was by them, like a physician desensitized to the carnage around him. Without that desensitization, his emotions would overwhelm him and he could do no good. Ms. Singer likewise allows the reader to draw his responses from his own reservoir of suppressed emotion.

The effect is startling. From her description of standing naked as Joseph Mengele selected the day's gas chamber victims, to the absence of children in the camp due to their immediate executions upon arrival at Auschwitz, the reader cannot help but be changed by Singer's tale.

For this reason, March to Freedom stands as a vivid reminder of the depths to which humanity can sink if left unchecked, and of the heights to which we can and should reach to keep freedom in our grasp.

The Nazis put Edith and her family in Auschwitz when she was 16 and later moved her to Taucha. In this book, Edith tells what life was like inside these two camps.

Despite the horrible conditions of camp, Edith stays optimistic, finds extra food and clothing for herself and others, and sabotages a munitions factory.

My favorite part is where Edith talks about resistance: "I resisted the Nazis, but I was not alone. Whether it was intentional sabotage or quiet suffering, it was resistance. Not giving in to the hunger and cold, not breaking down from the grueling work, enduring every imaginable pain, anguish, and torture--that was resistance. Every one of us who survived--and many who did not--resisted."

That's powerful!

I let my teenage daughter read this book, and she loved it because the book is intense, short, and incredible. The book is full of interesting details and shows the importance of family.

March to Freedom is a great introduction to the experience of the holocaust, and it inspires people by showing them how one young woman stayed positive in a horrible situation.

This thought-provoking collection of original essays, edited and written by American history professors ( and one Britain), defines the limitations that Western societies have attempted to impose on themselves in warfare, and the extent to which these attempts have been influenced by the development of new weapons. Adam Roberts's "Land Warfare: From Hague to Nuremberg" focuses on the non-use of poison gas in WWII as one of the successes of voluntary restraint, but he goes on to note that the introduction of the machine gun, tank, submarine and bomber increased humankind's capacity for destruction. The present century, despite the optimism at the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907, saw the intensification of violence and the adoption of indiscriminate forms of "total" war. Tami Biddle Davis's "Air Power" makes the point that the most effective aerial bombardment campaign in history, Operation Desert Storm, was also the most indiscriminate. As for the Bomb, David Alan Rosenberg's "Nuclear War Planning" argues that nuclear weapons remain largely outside the sphere of international controls. In the concluding piece, "The Laws of War," Paul Kennedy and George Andreopoulos discuss the intersection between human rights and the laws of war, especially in connection with the current debate over "humane intervention."
