About the Author
The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her father's home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. In their twenties and thirties they lived in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, where Hans sold bathtubs in villages along the Amazon River. Eventually Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the Reys' home and community. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together, including SPOTTY, PRETZEL, and lift-the-flap books such as HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941. Their incorrigible little monkey has become an American icon, selling millions of books and capturing the hearts of readers everywhere. CURIOUS GEORGE has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

Great book to help your child learn to read :)

I love reading with my son and have been doing so since he was a baby. When I saw these books I had to buy them as they have Curious George in them and they are a learning tool. My son enjoys reading these books with us, he loves to hear the story and is starting to learn some of the words.

The books are simple books with mostly simple sentences. On the inside cover of each book there is a helpful guide that will tell you words you will see in the book to learn and other word that are in the book so you can look for them. I have included a picture of one cover so you can see what it looks like, also a picture to how you the cover of a book along with the cardboard case in which the books come. The 3rd picture I have included shows a couple of pages of one book to give you an idea of what they look like inside.

I am looking forward to many more hours, days, weeks, months and years of reading with my son. My son is 3 and already learning some words... it's so exciting :) If my review helped you please click the button below, thank you and God bless!

Perfect combination of PHONICS, sight words (few) and FUN COLOR PICTURES!

I bought this set with high hopes of it helping engage my 6yo boy and help him understand the phonics side of reading and boost his confidence. It is working PERFECTLY! The phonics skills are dominant yet they have sight words (introduced in the front book cover to review right before reading the book) that don't follow the phonics rules. They use compound words nicely, also. I think this is wonderful because it also helps build confidence, the word may look too big to read but then they realize it is two small words they can sound out and Kaboom! They can read BIG words! Each book has a short introduction to review the contents of the book: Book 1 - Curious George Is Happy - New sounds in this book: short A as in LAP, H as in HOLD. Here are some useful words you will see in this book. See how well you can learn them! IS ON SO Here are some fun new words you will see in this book RABBIT PANCAKES. Book 4 - The Doctor's Office- New sounds in this book: short O as in NOT, D as in DOCTOR. Here are some useful words you will see in this book. See how well you can learn them! WHY NO AT Here are some fun new words you will see in this book. HOSPITAL PROBLEM DOCTOR LOLLIPOP
These books are colorful, and have mostly simple (confidence building) and fun words to read keep my boy interested. On day 3 of reading them, he lit up and said, "I'm getting better!"
What is very cool is that these beginner books are very similar to the more advanced books so you can get the more advanced books as they progress and they will retain and recognize the similarities! I find these wonderful and love that my son now feels confident reading to his little sister, who in a couple of years can use the same books to learn to read! Worth buying!

Book is good, cards are meh

Very nice copy of the book - we've been reading it from our Curious George treasury and wanted something a bit easier to handle. I'm a little disappointed in the flashcards, though. They seem to be good quality and are a nice size (similar to a deck of playing cards), but I'd really been hoping that they would have the illustrations from the book! The front of each card has the letters and a picture of George doing something, and the back has an illustration (sometimes with George, mostly without). For example, D has George playing a drum on the side with D d, and the back has a drum set. I'm sure my kiddo will like them, but why do new illustrations when the ones in the book are so fun?

According to most relationship books, the key to a solid marriage is communication, communication, communication. Phooey, says John Gottman, Ph.D., author of the much-lauded Why Marriages Succeed or Fail. There's much more to a solid, "emotionally intelligent" marriage than sharing every feeling and thought, he points out--though most couples therapists ineffectively (and expensively) harp on these concepts.

Gottman, the director of the Gottman Institute, has found through studying hundreds of couples in his "love lab" that it only takes five minutes for him to predict--with 91 percent accuracy--which couples will eventually divorce. He shares the four not-so-obvious signs of a troubled relationship that he looks for, using sometimes amusing passages from his sessions with married couples. (One standout is Rory, the pediatrician who didn't know the name of the family dog because he spent so much time at work.)

Gottman debunks many myths about divorce (primary among them that affairs are at the root of most splits). He also reveals surprising facts about couples who stay together. They do engage in screaming matches. And they certainly don't resolve every problem. "Take Allan and Betty," he writes. "When Allan gets annoyed at Betty, he turns on ESPN. When Betty is upset with him, she heads for the mall. Then they regroup and go on as if nothing's happened. Never in forty-five years of marriage have they sat down to have a 'dialogue' about their relationship." While this may sound like a couple in trouble, Gottman found that they pass the love-lab tests and say honestly that "they are both very satisfied with their relationship and they love each other deeply."

Through a series of in-depth quizzes, checklists, and exercises, similar to the ones he uses in his workshops, Gottman provides the framework for coping with differences and strengthening your marriage. Lots of insight regardless of whether you're married, engaged, or just dating

This was an extremely insightful read leading up to (ironically) my divorce. It helped me to more clearly identify what was going wrong in my marriage and what it would take to fix it. His descriptions of the different ways couples argue were especially helpful. He provides relationship strengthening exercises that can be done individually or as a couple. One exercise in particular provided a lot of clarity because my immediate thought on reading it was, "This seems like a really good idea, but the emotional toll it would take on me given the state of our relationship isn't a cost I'm willing to bear." That sober look at the costs necessary to repair my marriage allowed me to clearly see the pros and cons of staying in the relationship. Although we ultimately divorced, I continue to use the insight I gained from this book in evaluating the health and long-term viability of my dating relationships.

Read with a highlighter in hand

Seven Principles is a research-based book addressing a variety of marital difficulties. Gottman bases his advice on clinical studies—observable, repeatable, and quantifiable data—which makes the heart-directed core of his book all the more more surprising. It promotes a science of emotion and communication. It's a bit on the long side due to its many examples and descriptions, but it's worth sticking through to the end. The questionnaires peppered throughout the book are particularly useful at helping you diagnose areas which need improvement, followed by specific counsel on how to improve. In short: this is much more a workbook with assignments than a lecture or sermon to memorize.

That's why I recommend reading Seven Principles with a highlighter in hand. You can mark the passages in which Gottman gives specific advice/instruction so that when you revisit the book you can quickly skip over the filler. (The filler consists of examples and discussion of how research methods. You really only need to read those parts once. Identifying the applicable parts of the book quickly will help facilitate your revisiting the book for advice over time.)

Harmonious Relationships

John M. Gottman has great suggestions that have supported my relationship with my husband. Of the "seven principles", my favorite is "Turn toward Each Other Instead of Away". I found the questionnaires inspiring and with Gottman's discoveries, I can see that my husband and I have strength in our marriage and our "emotional bank account" is full. I enjoyed Gottman's observations on couples he worked with and his tenacity to discover principles that can help couples experience harmonious relationships.

Another relationship book that I highly recommend is Ariel & Shya Kane's How to Have A Match Made in Heaven. Like Gottman, the Kanes write about sessions they have with their clients - with a BONUS - links to companion videos & audios of the Kanes working with their clients. So you get to "see" what you just "read"! I have discovered a sense of ease with all my relating since reading this book. It's an amazing book. I applaud both Gottman and the Kanes for writing successful books that support relationship.

St. Paul, I'm not a fan!

I have never been a St. Paul fan. His" woman go home and do what your husband wants" speech was a real turn off, but I found out he didn't write it. It was written later by someone else. I like this book and I even like Paul. Pope Benedict does a lot to explain Paul and how he fits in. I found the book illuminating and realized that I have not been fair to Paul. Pope Benedict is a real academic and I found his work really thought-provoking. St. Paul is really worth the time.

Sketch of The Apostle

The Pope continues the teaching he began in earlier audiences that have been turned into books, like The Fathers and The Apostles. This sketch of The Apostle is a loving, insightful meditation on Paul's conversion and teaching.

One of the left-handed compliments in vogue in the secular world is to label Paul as the "founder of the Church." Beware of people who propagate this myth; they'll use the bible as a reliable, historical source when they wish to document Paul's travels - and travel he did - he truly was the apostle to the Gentiles, and evangelized much of the Mediterranean.

Yet these same people suddenly adopt a skeptical approach to the bible when you try to point out that Paul actually met Christ on the road to Damascus, or the years he spent in learning the teaching of Christ from the twelve in Jerusalem. The goal of such people is to separate Christ from his Church, to say that the Church is a human creation and not the mystical body of the Son of God. Pope Benedict carefully and lovingly presents Paul as very much a pillar of Christ's Church, but not its founder.

Pope Benedict also explains Paul's message of justification by faith, pointing out the places of agreement with Protestants, but also very gently distinguishing the place of charity (manifested in works) as the ultimate fruit of faith. Faith without works is indeed a dead faith.

Some of the topics covered are the sacraments (especially Baptism, the Eucharist and Marriage), Paul's Christology, the Cross and the Resurrection (and why the two can't be separated and make up one Paschal mystery), and the Parousia.

This is excellent teaching for all believers; it is deep in meaning without being technical or difficult to understand.

I enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book. However, if you are looking for a more in depth review of St. Paul and his life, I would look elsewhere. The former pope, as always in my opinion, provides an elegant theological overview of Paul's mission and message. While I found this interesting, I felt that a discussion of Paul himself was quite peripheral and almost served as a platform for former Pope Benedict to teach theology. In fact, each chapter was derived from his weekly addresses best I could discern.

Relying on the kindness of strangers during her year's stint at the minimum security correctional facility in Danbury, Conn., Kerman, now a nonprofit communications executive, found that federal prison wasn't all that bad. In fact, she made good friends doing her time among the other women, many street-hardened drug users with little education and facing much longer sentences than Kerman's original 15 months. Convicted of drug smuggling and money laundering in 2003 for a scheme she got tangled up in 10 years earlier when she had just graduated from Smith College, Kerman, at 34, was a self-surrender at the prison: quickly she had to learn the endless rules, like frequent humiliating strip searches and head counts; navigate relationships with the other campers and unnerving guards; and concoct ways to fill the endless days by working as an electrician and running on the track. She was not a typical prisoner, as she was white, blue-eyed, and blonde (nicknamed the All-American Girl), well educated, and the lucky recipient of literature daily from her fianc�, Larry, and family and friends. Interesting but ultimately disappointing

I got interested in reading Orange is the New Black after reading an excerpt in the New York Times, and reading an article from Piper's fiance Larry in the Times as well. I just finished it, and I found it really interesting - the details she provides on life in prison, the rituals, the jobs, the treatment of prisoners, is really fascinating and a view on a minimum security prison I'd never seen before. But I was often frustrated with Kerman's lack of details - I had no sense of how it was that she was free to just go do yoga or run around the track whenever she wanted, or what kind of hours she worked at her electric and construction jobs. I was really moved by the descriptions of the other women in prison and of the friendships she formed, but I also had trouble keeping the women straight, especially when she'd bring up a name that she hadn't mentioned in several chapters, and I would try to remember who Delicious or Pom-Pom or Toni was.

I did find her to be a bit smug, going out of her way to explain that while most prisoners kept to their ethnic "tribes," she was friends with everyone, other prisoners came to her for help with their homework or legal work, she lent out all of her books and gave away all of her possessions, etc. While I liked her voice, I felt she went overboard in trying to portray herself as non-racist, and as someone who didn't feel above everyone she was incarcerated with.

Mostly though, I was disappointed in the ending. For the last 100 pages, I was looking forward to the end, to what happens when Piper gets home. She ruminates a lot on the balance between getting used to prison rituals but not getting so comfortable that you forget the outside world, so I wanted to know how she found the adjustment to home, whether there was any tension with Larry. Most of all, after she credits the women at Danbury for their friendship and kindness, I wondered if she simply left without turning back or if she kept in touch with anyone, wrote letters, saw anyone who got out on the outside (like Pop)? I felt robbed of one last chapter, which I felt the book was leading up to.

All in all, this was enjoyable, but not something I'll enthusiastically recommend.

Very different from the Netflix mini-series....
By Learning All The Time
I really liked this book. It is written like a series of sequential articles rather than a narrative with true character development, but it still provides interesting insights into the rhythm of institutional prison life, with its mind-numbing bureaucracy and its mash-up of humanity trying to adapt or deal with incarceration. It is told from Kerman's pov, and thus her reactions to life in prison make up the bulk of the book, but she still provides a lot of food for thought about our prisons and the people who live in them.

I came to the book through the Netflix mini-series, and the only reason I watched that was because of Kate Mulgrew who is "Red", but I found myself completely drawn in by the series story line and the lives of the characters in the movie, in spite of the fact the show was much, MUCH more shockingly graphic than anything I typically enjoy (used tampon sandwich for starters). After the mind-blowing ending of the first season of the mini-series, I had to read the book to see whether something like that incident really happened. The answer is thankfully no. There are no deaths in this book, no overt sex, no pregnancy drama, no drug-running drama, no brutal attacks, and so on.

It is difficult for many people to have compassion for people who are in prison or to care about their living conditions since they "made their bed", but I think books that remind us of our common humanity with "others" are important and worth reading, and so I added a star to the book's rating.

Recommended. And if you are put off by the graphic nature of the mini-series, this book is a "safe" read. If you are hoping to read graphic descriptions of events portrayed in the mini-series, you will be disappointed.

Wrong decisions can catch up with you.

The author was in a Federal Prison for Drug activity that was ten years prior to her imprisonment. She gave an interesting description of her 13 months there. I read this out of curiosity as my granddaughters told me the tv show was "not grandma appropriate". The book did not shock me and I still have no intention of watching the tv program.
