After a long, preachy start denouncing contemporary society with its high divorce rate and "commitment-phobic" singles, idealizing marriages of the past and articulating some gender stereotypes that may turn off some readers the author of Kosher Sex ends up delivering a wealth of solid, specific and practical advice for the lonely. Refusing to accept protestations of contentment from singles, Rabbi Boteach insists that commitment to a loving relationship is fundamental to human well-being and happiness. He blames the widespread inability to find long-lasting love on consumer habits that have crept into current dating mores (e.g., waiting for the "best" person to marry), and spending too much time on love-substitutes (work, friends, sex, independence) that prevent love from entering the lives of men and women alike. With his usual sprinkling of religious references (Adam and Eve are used as relationship role models), Boteach encourages singles to acknowledge their loneliness and work on their own behaviors and choices instead of merely lamenting the lack of worthy mates or lauding the joys of the single life. He recommends "emotional nakedness" before the other kind, and a complete shift from "dating for sport" to dating for love and marriage. An enthusiastic advocate for marriage, although (or perhaps because) his own parents were unhappily married and ultimately divorced, Boteach firmly places responsibility for finding and maintaining love on the shoulders of each reader. Invaluable Guide for those seeking real love

Author Shmuley Boteach creates a much needed and long overdue "user friendly" guide for singles caught in the often frustrating and unpredictable maelstrom known as the dating world.
By extending compassion and offering tools for honest self-examination, Boteach takes the reader on a witty and yet serious journey into the necessary introspection required for every single who is serious about finding a soul mate. The author is never stuffy or preachy but always extremely down to earth. Clearly an amazingly experienced and reputed relationship expert, Boteach writes confidently, with a distinctive and deserved authority. Without apology, he brazenly addresses the issues at hand, incorporating a no nonsense approach, going straight to the heart of the dating matter. He evidently has an uncanny understanding of the pitfalls associated with dating as mere sport and how many singles unconsciously get caught in a cycle of self-pity leading to inevitable self-defeat.
Being single myself and considering the observably downtrodden and discouraged state of many of my single contemporaries, I found this book to be extremely practical and generously offering surprisingly sound advice rather than just expounding upon the lamenting title, "Why Can't I Fall in Love?" In purchasing this book, I was at first rather tentative. The title deceptively fooled me into believing that it was a book in which I would find my self diagnosed among those singles now labeled as, "helpless and hopeless." Much to the contrary, I have come away with a book which I am now reading for the second time, wanting to further absorb it's remarkable tenets. Many other singles have shared with me their using, "Why Can't I Fall in Love?" as a reference guide for deciphering the baffling world of their emotions as single men and women.
Considering the self-admitted, quasi-closet-dysfunctional state of many singles, the book is ingeniously written in classic, "Twelve Step" format. Once the challenging quizzes throughout and adventurous exercises are completed, poor and addictive dating habits are no longer viable and productive healing is offered as in any other "Twelve Step Program." The reader is now able to understand common dating myths and albeit reluctantly, also identify with the hidden fears which plague many singles. Through this thought-training process, Boteach paradoxically creates a greater vulnerability in the heart of a single person as he prepares them for big event, the pursuit of real love.
"Why Can't I Fall in Love" is similar to Boteach's previous and not surprisingly, bestseller, "Kosher Sex." Both works reflect Boteach's profound commitment to romantic love as key to reaching the highest state of human happiness. The difference in these two works is that this new manual for finding love will appeal to a much larger reading audience as it is comprised of the rising numbers of those marrying later and those suddenly divorced and finding themselves back in the field. My only critique is that this book should have anteceded "Kosher Sex" in laying the groundwork for the foundations of the ultimate goal which is of course, unbreakable monogamy.
Despite the change in the dating scene in the past few decades, the author addresses those very dynamics, all the while maintaining the fundamental principles of dating and marriage, thus preventing the book itself from ever becoming "dated." With Boteach's gift of storytelling and matchless wit, the reader becomes so relaxed that they suddenly feel as if they are in private and on going counseling sessions, being given free of charge.
Boteach has saved the day here for wayward singles. "Why Can't I Fall in Love?" offers a map to navigate the fearful and unchartered course towards finding a soul mate. Boteach's merciless call to honesty, challenges even the most hardened skeptic about the deep and abiding human need for romantic love. The value of his insights for lonely and searching singles cannot be overstated.
To say that this book is a "must have" for every single is rather cliche' and yet "mandatory" is even more apropos. "Why Can't I Fall in Love?, A 12-step program, is truly an invaluable tool for healing, survival and ultimately prospering, in the quest for true love.

An Incredibly Powerful Book!

This book was such a pleasure to read! Once I picked up, "Why Can't I Fall in Love," I couldn't put it down! This book made me laugh while seriously wanting to face the stagnant state of my singlehood. As each compelling chapter unfolded, I began understanding the common mistakes singles make which lead to an inevitable downward spiral straight into the dating doldrums.
Shmuley Boteach guides and leads you beyond the myths and the delusions, into an Eden of new thinking. Boteach also impressively "practices what he preaches," Clearly a serious family man, and unashamedly still in love with his wife of many years, the reader starts to realize that this author must have some secret and thankfully, he more than gladly shares it. I was also impressed by his respect for women which is extremely profound and so welcome in a society where women still often tend to be viewed as mere sex-objects.
Although the author's reputation as a controversial figure often precedes him, give him his due, Boteach knows relationship and love like no other author on the market. His penchant for complacency is never to be taken seriously as it is always in the name of humor and is offset by the humility found in his endearing, and when required, self-deprecating style. I'm convinced that through this extraordinary book, the average, lovelorn single could even find a way to meet someone despite being stranded alone on a desert island! I have personally applied his innovative yet simple concepts and have finally found the relationship I have always been in search of! Without this book and it's stimulating and enriching "love lessons," I would certainly still be alone. S. Boteach ventures out with such concern for the lonely at heart that you can't come away without being moved and transformed. For those of any age who dread remaining terminally single, "Why Can't I Fall in Love" has the cure!

THE book for singles!

WOW!! "Why Can't I Fall in Love? A 12-Step Program," is THE book that every single needs along with food and water! As a single person myself, who has been "looking for love in all the wrong places," I finally have an understanding of exactly what I have been doing wrong. I never realized how many negative and close-minded thought patterns were preventing me from meeting the right person! The author sets out on a brave and reckless rescue mission here, intending to right the many wrongs made by dating singles and thus saving them from a doomed and lonely existence. Risking it all, Boteach dives in and addresses issues you would never think of and offers solutions that you wish you had. Shmuley Boteach has outdone even himself this time with another sure best-seller. This new book showcases his ablity to understand singles and their problems, like no other relationship "expert" out there today. Enough of books on "rules" and gimmicks, Boteach's sane and sensible approach is what has earned him the reputation as "The Love Prophet." In this book, he reigns supreme and holds onto that title on every page. Every single searching for love needs to take this 12-Step challenge! This is a life-changing book for sure. Highly Recommended!

About the Author
Rosalind Charlesworth, Ph.D., is professor emerita and retired department chair in the Department of Child and Family Studies at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. During her tenure at Weber State University, she worked with the faculty of the Department of Teacher Education to develop continuity from preprimary to primary school in the program for students in the early childhood education licensure program. She also contributed as a guest presenter in the Elementary Mathematics Methods class. Dr. Charlesworth is known for her contributions to research on early childhood teachers' beliefs and practices. She taught courses in early education and child development at other universities before joining the faculty at Weber State University. In 1999, she was the co-recipient of the NAECTE/Allyn & Bacon Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator award. In 2014 she received the Legacy Award from the WSU Child and Family Studies Department in recognition of her contributions to early childhood education. Dr. Charlesworth has provided service to the field through active involvement in professional organizations and is currently on the editorial board of the Early Childhood Education Journal.

Excellent Child Development Text

Charlesworth, the jack-of-all-trades early childhood writer, gives her version of a child development text, and resultingly produces a gold star effort namely because of her super-extreme focus on details.

She begins with a "how-to" perspective on understanding development then proceeds from prenatal development to the culminating whole child. Lots of pictures, lots of charts, lots of side articles...and PLENTY of research citations for further study and scrutiny.

A must read and have reference!

Hi! I live in Japan and am a children's language school owner. This book is a must read and important reference to anyone serious and committed to teaching children, particularly children as a life's work. I'm still working through the book (even on the train!) and I am now have a great new reference written from an expert in the field. It's like having a licensed co-worker along side with me! Thank you Dr. Charlesworth for your jewels of information, particularly over here in Japan!

The definition of La Douleur Exquise is the heart wrenching pain of wanting someone you can't have, and this book from J.R. Rogue lives up to its title. The poems contained within the pages are heart wrenching, and soul consuming. They are real, and I felt all of the heart ache that Rogue pulled from the depths of her soul.I tried to pick a piece from the book that I could choose as a favorite, but the fact is that I found myself identifying with everything. There is not a poem in those pages that deserves more praise than the one before it. Every line written is as beautiful as it is painful, and I found myself constantly drawing from that pain. There is not one person on the planet that has never felt the feelings on these pages, and while reading it was a great reminder that we are never alone. There is always someone out there that has gone through similar instances. This is definitely one book that I will be going through time and time again.I have been a fan of Rogue's for quite some time and when the opportunity arose to review, I was completely all over it. I discovered her because one of my favorite authors posted some of her work on Instagram. I immediately fell in love with the sadness in her words and was looking for more of her work. I was so excited when I found out she was releasing a collection of her work and immediately pre-ordered this. This surpassed all of my expectations! I can't describe the emotional puddle I become every time I read this.

You can feel Jen’s pain through her tragic words. It's amazing how intimate poetry can be, it feels like she gave us a huge part of herself. Her words read like a classic already. She is easily my new favorite poet of our time!!!

Thought-Provoking and Genuine.

"For every lover who has tasted the unrequited kind, too many times."

Before I even began reading the poems, from just this line, I knew this would be a great read. I connected instantaneously and the poems that followed surely didn't disappoint. J.R. Rogue writes in such a raw, honest way - it's beautiful.

It reads like a journey, rather than a random string of poems. It's very cathartic, I was completely unable put it down - at the beginning, I related so strongly to that heartache, but by the end I wanted to feel that same release felt in the last poem. I love that it's honest, I love that it doesn't sugarcoat love as something that is always beautiful and perfect, but simultaneously still offers the hope that things will improve and we can stitch ourselves up and continue on. Highly recommend.

Emotive poetry for those who love and have once loved

I'm a lover of the poetry J.R. Rogue shares for free on Instagram. I wanted to support and thank her for sharing her emotive words with us and purchasing this collection with the lovely, illustrated cover was definitely the way to go.

I thought I was going to read only a couple poems a day (ya know, spread them out a bit) but then I finished it in a day. No regrets lol. Although I will be returning to this collection again after I experience a heartbreak like these.

Essential reading for Anglicans and students of early church history

Gray's The Origin and Early History of Christianity in Britain is an important and fascinating work that deserves a wider readership. It is essential reading for anyone interested in Anglicanism, the English Church, or early Church history.

It's not surprising that a work of such remarkable and essential research was done by a 19th Century Englishman, for 19th Century English scholarship is unmatched ("how are the mighty fallen"!) Thankfully, Artisan Publishers has reprinted the work.

Gray's work is divided into 4 parts:
I. The Origin and Early History of Christianity in Britain
II. The Church in Britain from the Close of the First Century to the Establishment of the Heptarchy
III. The Missionary Character and Work of the Early British Church
IV. The Mission of Augustine

Of these, the first section is by far the most important and riveting, and so I'll spend most of the rest of my review on this section. In Section I, Gray asserts the following:
1. that Joseph of Arimathea came to Britain in A.D. 38
2. that Britain was the first nation to proclaim Christianity as its religion
3. that the Aristobulus mentioned in the book of Romans traveled to Britain and
was made the first bishop of Britain
4. that St. Paul himself traveled to Britain

It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of these well-substantiated claims. If they are, true, then they refute what was once the prevailing wisdom that the Church of England was established in A.D. 597 by the Roman Catholic Church's commissioning of St. Augustine to establish a mission in Britain. In other words, the Church of England had a national, ecclesiastical identity for almost 6 centuries before the Roman Church came to the British shores.

Furthermore, this evidence underscores the importance of remembering that the Church of England was most certainly not created by Henry VIII!

In considering Gray's claims, it's important to begin with his methodology. Gray, fortunately, cites a wide variety of sources to back up his astonishing claims. While some of these sources contain legendary material, the number and antiquity of sources Gray cites converge to paint a picture that is most probably an accurate one.

The evidence at hand will not persuade everyone who is looking for overwhelming evidence for Gray's claims. But given the general availability of evidence for the ancient world of 2000 years ago and the fragility of manuscript evidence, for example, Gray's claims are as solidly established as much of what we think we know about ancient history. As Gray states, "Had any doubt existed, on this point of priority [of the English Church], it certainly would have been contested by some of the other Churches . . ." (p. 9). Again, "No author, indeed, who has taken pains to examine its evidence rejects its main facts" (p. 10).

For the curious, here are some of the sources Gray cites for his claims that Joseph of Arimathea came to Britain in A.D. 38 and that Britain was the first nation that proclaimed Christianity as its religion:
1. Polydore Vergil (Roman Catholic contemporary of Henry VIII)
2. Cardinal Pole (1555)
3. The Councils of Pisa (1417), Constance (1419), and Sena.
4. Sabellius
5. Gildas (520-560)
6. Maeglygwyn of Llandaff (450)
7. Vellum Cottonian manuscript (also quoted by Archbishop Usher in the 17th century)
8. The Vatican Manuscript
9. The Chronicon of Pseudo-Dexter
10. The Fragmenta of Haleca, Archbishop of Saragossa
11. Archbishop Parker (in a letter to John Calvin!)

Gray compiles an equally impressive array of sources to suggest that St. Paul traveled to Britain.

As you can see by the sources I listed above, some of the dates of the sources are missing. That's because Gray doesn't provide them. This is one of the shortcomings of Gray's work.

Gray's work is an essential starting point for understanding early church history, particularly that of the Church of England and Anglicanism. However, his work needs to be updated not only to provide missing pieces of information but also to bring it into line with the past century of scholarship. Any takers?

As Anglicanism tries desperately to find its way forward, it should consider the evidence in Gray's work and remember that its roots go back to the 1st century in the Church of England, and that Anglicanism did not begin or in the 16th century of Henry VIII and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer.

...for those new to the subject and who think Augustine (not that Augustine, the other Augustine) was the first to bring Christianity to Britain. Gray suggests evidence that Christianity arrived in Britain even before the Roman Empire began it's expansion onto the island. Surprising and well written and worth pursuing.

Grateful for this effort

It is nice to learn more about what happened before St. Augustine was came from Rome to Brittain at the close of the 5th century. I know history is written by the victors, and no one more than Rome believed when you meant to destroy a foe, it included their names, their books their, temples etc... To this day, many think St. Augustine introduced Christianity to Brittain; as if for 5 and a half centuries, it was without Christianity. This makes me wonder if Rome's imperial religion did the same.

He received the B.S. degree (1978) in mechanical engineering and the B.A. degree (1978) in business administration from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

A. A. WESSOL is a part-time Lubrication Consultant for the ExxonMobil Corporation in Manassas, Virginia. Mr. Wessol retired from the Mobil Corporation after 24 years in various advanced technical positions. The author or coauthor of numerous professional papers on the environmental aspects of lubrication, plant engineering, hydraulics, and pneumatics, he received the B.S. degree (1972) in mathematics, physics, and chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Nothing new or exciting here

Ewan Mawdsley has written a book which does what it says. It recounts the first 12 days of December which tell us how the Second World War became a truly global conflict. However it simply retells stories which have been told over and over again. No new interpretations are offered and there is no attempt to offer new insights into the situation at the day.

I will give him points for creativity but the book itself does nothing to change my view of the war and didn't offer me any new insights.

Interesting Insights

Its long been debated if Franklin Roosevelt had clear forewarning of the Japanese attack in December 1941. As Mawdsley's book makes clear, Roosevelt, Churchill and others did have a great deal of information on Japanese intent; however, the attack was expected in Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Pearl Harbor was truly a surprise and brought America into what was now a world war. Hitler's subsequent declaration of war on the U.S. took the gloves off on what had previously been America's limited support for Britain and the Soviet Union. While the United States had slowly been rearming for several years, December 7th stunned the nation into a total war footing. The loss of battleships was a shock for a country who's only significant military force was its navy. Recovery was quick and by June 1942, the Japanese were in retreat having lost four of their six irreplaceable large fleet carriers at the Battle of Midway. The German's took much longer to turn back and it was the Soviets who were the main weapon in this effort (supplied with a large quantity of American trucks, boots, food and other equipment). Mawdsley appropriately focuses attention on Hitler's attack on Moscow in the fall of 1941 and the Soviet counter-attacks in early December as the start of the eventual German defeat.

"December 1941: Twelve Days That Began A World War" is a useful addition to a library of World War II books. On it's own, the work would not provide sufficient information for a reader without a broader frame of reference. It lacks depth of coverage as it moves from Washington to London to Berlin to Tokyo to Moscow and elsewhere. It comes across a bit like reading a good daily newspaper for twelve days. Still, I would recommend this brief (by World War II standards at slightly more than 300 pages) book to an informed reader.

Incredibly accurate and informative.

This book will show you important facts about WW II, that you are unlikely to find in other history books.. imagination was not shone in the writing of this. An incredible amount of time must have been spent involved in the research for facts and figures. If you are a history buff, you will want to read this book.

Great Teaching Resource

I've been teaching Hamlet for 15 years. I picked up this book about 8 or so years ago. I love it. Each left-hand page has an explanation of difficult or archaic words or phrases that appear on the right-hand page. This has really helped my students not be quite as intimidated. It's been great addition to my teaching resources.

Better than No Fear Shakespeare!

I love this book! The explanations on the separate page are so incredibly helpful! I hate the way that No Fear Shakespeare just rewrites the text, and this book just explains what is or might be confusing. Great price and great book!
