A Life Never Forgotten

In March to Freedom Edith Singer states, "When I was liberated by the Russian Army on May 8, 1945, in a small German village, I promised myself that I would not talk or think about concentration camp ever again." How fortunate the world is that she did not keep her promise. March to Freedom is an excellent read that illustrates a young woman's fight for survival through one of the darkest periods in human history.

Although the Jewish Holocaust is one of the most horrific moments in world history, it must be remembered, and the stories must be told if humanity is to learn from the past and prevent its mistakes from reoccurring.

Edith Singer demonstrates courage and strength throughout the pages of her personal memoir sharing her experiences in Auschwitz and the Taucha labor camp with explicit detail. Singer's narrative tone, personal stories, and attention to detail permit readers of all ages to experience her journey of survival. In less than one hundred pages, readers witness her unwavering dedication to life. She explains how as a young woman she fought against the Germans and maintained dignity even when they attempted to destroy her identity. When forced to receive a tattoo on her arm, she expressed, "They are de-humanizing me. I will not be a person any more, only a number. Now, I am marked just like cattle"(52). Despite the evils of humanity, Edith Singer shines as a beacon of hope, retains her faith, and encourages others to stay strong. A True Account of the Holocaust

Sixty-three years have passed since the Germans surrendered to Allied forces in the spring of 1945, yet the horror of Nazi atrocities remains as vivid in our collective social consciousness as ever. Books written by and about concentration camp survivors continue to be relevant today, reaching into the hearts and minds of yet another generation for whom the idea of genocide seems more like something from the movies than from history.

Edith Singer is one of those clear voices bridging the past to the present. Her direct and insightful perusal of her experiences in Auschwitz strikes a strangely alarming mix of emotions within the soul. One so far removed from them by both time and political systems feels both a sense of disbelief that such inhumanity could really have occurred, and of dread that if it happened once it could very well happen again.

Ms. Singer's nearly detached observations of events that were most assuredly the stuff of nightmares, demonstrates just how deeply affected she was by them, like a physician desensitized to the carnage around him. Without that desensitization, his emotions would overwhelm him and he could do no good. Ms. Singer likewise allows the reader to draw his responses from his own reservoir of suppressed emotion.

The effect is startling. From her description of standing naked as Joseph Mengele selected the day's gas chamber victims, to the absence of children in the camp due to their immediate executions upon arrival at Auschwitz, the reader cannot help but be changed by Singer's tale.

For this reason, March to Freedom stands as a vivid reminder of the depths to which humanity can sink if left unchecked, and of the heights to which we can and should reach to keep freedom in our grasp.

The Nazis put Edith and her family in Auschwitz when she was 16 and later moved her to Taucha. In this book, Edith tells what life was like inside these two camps.

Despite the horrible conditions of camp, Edith stays optimistic, finds extra food and clothing for herself and others, and sabotages a munitions factory.

My favorite part is where Edith talks about resistance: "I resisted the Nazis, but I was not alone. Whether it was intentional sabotage or quiet suffering, it was resistance. Not giving in to the hunger and cold, not breaking down from the grueling work, enduring every imaginable pain, anguish, and torture--that was resistance. Every one of us who survived--and many who did not--resisted."

That's powerful!

I let my teenage daughter read this book, and she loved it because the book is intense, short, and incredible. The book is full of interesting details and shows the importance of family.

March to Freedom is a great introduction to the experience of the holocaust, and it inspires people by showing them how one young woman stayed positive in a horrible situation.

Tami Biddle Davis's "Air Power" makes the point that the most effective aerial bombardment campaign in history, Operation Desert Storm, was also the most indiscriminate. As for the Bomb, David Alan Rosenberg's "Nuclear War Planning" argues that nuclear weapons remain largely outside the sphere of international controls. In the concluding piece, "The Laws of War," Paul Kennedy and George Andreopoulos discuss the intersection between human rights and the laws of war, especially in connection with the current debate over "humane intervention."

Poetry night at The Carolina Kitchen near the Rhode Island Metro station was packed. There were a handful of people there that I recognized from Howard, but most were strangers. That gave me a feeling of relief. I had never recited my poetry live before. Actually, I was not a poet at all; I was a venter.

I had placed my name on the list to read a piece that I had appropriately titled “Bitter.” It was the way that I felt, so it made all the sense in the world to select it for my first—and probably last—time reading in public. I was nervous, but sipping on a chocolate martini was helping.

There was a young Rastafarian up at bat reciting something about women with big booties who believed that their sex was their best asset. He was going on and on about how women need to stop acting like a THOT—That Ho Over There—and needed to demand respect for themselves. I was feeling him and wished that my roommate were there to hear it. I was far from celibate, but Winsome was straight wilding out the majority of the time.

He finished up his piece to mass applause and finger snapping. I was hoping that they would call at least two or three other names before mine so I could finish my drink. Even though I spoke in front of my students and faculty all the time, this was different. My words would be personal and from the heart.

Queen Aishah, the comedic host for the evening, came back on stage working her fabulous hips, rocking her attention-getting hairstyle, and grabbed the microphone. “That was hot, Brother Hakeem. I hope some of the young ladies in this joint tonight take heed of your words.” She shielded her eyes and glanced out at the audience like she was trying to find someone in particular. “Yeah, I see some chicks dressed like THOTs tonight. Ya’ll advertising, and that’s all I have to say about that.”

Most of the audience laughed but I noticed some of the scantily clad chicks were offended. I could barely keep up with all the terminology meant solely to degrade women. THOT was a new one. Ho, chickenhead, bird, and the good old-fashioned whore were tossed around on the regular. The sad part was that a lot of women had started to embrace the monikers and often called one another those names.

Thank goodness that I had chosen a simple outfit: black jeans, black boots, a black sweater, and a black beanie studded with little silver stars. I was in a militant mood so my clothes reflected my attitude.

“All right, we’re going to move on.” Queen Aishah looked down at the tablet in her free hand. “Next up is Jemistry. Damn, love that name.”

So much for finishing my martini. I sighed and navigated my way to the front as people looked at me strangely, as if to say, “You’d better bring it after Brother Hakeem put it down!” No doubt he was a tough act to follow.

I took the stage and Queen Aishah handed me the microphone, grinned, and sashayed off. She was so confident in herself; I wish I could have said the same.

I cleared my throat and tried to imagine that the room was empty, that I was simply practicing like I had done several times at home earlier that day.

“This piece is called ‘Bitter.’ It’s for all the sisters out there who have been hurt, despite giving their all and being all that they can be for men who do not appreciate them.”

Several women yelled out things like, “That’s right!” “Amen, Sister!” and “Preach!”

Several men hissed and booed and acted like I had called them out by their government names.

I cleared my throat again and then start spitting out the words—slowly, concisely, and from the pit of my soul where all of my own personal pain and bitterness collided.

Hurt

Pain

Anguish

Bitter

That is how I feel as a woman

A woman who has been

Deceived

Betrayed

Disrespected

Humiliated

Dismissed

Used

Demeaned

Abused

Mistreated

It makes no sense . . .

No sense at all

I am a good woman

I opened my eyes, which I had clamped shut at some point halfway through, and there was an eerie silence over the entire place for a few seconds. Then there was mass applause and cheers . . . from the women. A few men clapped and many were shaking their heads and crossing their arms in defiance. Their egos were bruised, but they knew that I had spoken nothing but the truth. They were going to learn that day.

As I walked off the stage, Queen Aishah came up to announce the next poet. She grinned at me and whispered, “You said that! That was some real shit right there!”

When I returned to my seat at the bar, there was a man sitting on the stool next to mine. I hadn’t noticed him before. I wondered if he had come in while I was performing. He was almost like a giant—at least six five compared to my five-two height. Even though he was sitting, I could tell that he was like a tree. He had a smooth, dark-chocolate complexion, eyes the shade of almonds, a polished fade, and he wore rimless eyeglasses.

The bartender came over to me. “Need anything else?”

“Can I have another chocolate martini, please?”

The guy kept staring at me and I wondered if he was about to go off on me about what I had said onstage.

After another minute or two, once my fresh drink was in front of me, I could not take the stares anymore. There was an older woman onstage reciting a poem about the joys of menopause and moving on to the next stage of life. He was not paying attention to her at all. He was too busy watching my every move.

“The entertainment is that way.” I pointed toward the stage. “I’m finished with my performance.”

He grinned and exposed a beautiful smile and straight teeth. “I enjoyed your piece. ‘Bitter,’ wasn’t it?”

I rolled me eyes. Here it comes! “Yes, it was called ‘Bitter.’ That’s what I am.”

“I kind of figured that, and it’s such a shame.”

He looked me up and down like I was on display. I was hoping that my face wasn’t shiny from having been underneath the hot lights, even momentarily.

“You’re too beautiful, sassy, and intriguing to be bitter over a man from your past.”

“Actually, you stand corrected. I am bitter regarding several men from my past. All of the men from my past. Not a single one of them appreciated any of the goodness in me until after I was gone.”

“So now the rest of us men can forget it, huh?”

I took a sip of my drink and analyzed what he was implying with his question. The Virgo in me kicked in. One thing is a definite trait among Virgos—we overthink and overanalyze like crazy. On the one hand, I was sick of men to a degree. At least the whimsical fantasy that one man could make a commitment to one woman and do the right thing by her. On the other hand, I loved sex and the specimen sitting beside me was most certainly a candidate for some freaky sex.

He kept looking at me as the menopausal broad left the stage. “Well?”

“I never said that no man has a chance with me. All I’m saying is that I’m not going to be so quick to throw my heart on the line again, unless a man presents himself correctly and is done with playing games. You feel me?”

“Somewhat.” He took a long guzzle from his draft beer. “But you have to realize that not all men have to be done with playing games. Some of us have never played them.”

I smirked. “That’s what you all say. All of you proclaim to be honest, trustworthy, and interested in settling down, up and until you get into a woman’s panties and move on to the next one.”

“Wow, someone has really hurt you!”

“Several someones have trampled all over me. They’ve treated me like a piece of disposable pussy or a deer that has already been hit in the road. Instead of picking me up and trying to resuscitate me, or better yet, leaving me the hell alone to suffer in silence, they run over me again and try to finish the job that the previous dude started.”

He shook his head and frowned. “It would probably be in my best interest to move to the other side of the bar and wish you a good evening.”

I shrugged. “Probably would be.”

He sat there for a few more seconds, still staring.

“Probably would be,” I repeated.

“Yes, probably.” He chuckled. “But instead, I’d like to pay for your drinks and ask if you’d like to head someplace quieter so we can continue this fascinating discussion.” He reached out his hand. “I’m Tevin Harris.”

I shook his hand. “Jemistry Daniels. I’m not so convinced this is a fascinating discussion, though.”

“I’m fascinated!”

I smirked and continued drinking. Another brother had taken the stage but I was really drowning him out. He was talking about some kind of impending “race war.” That always amused me when people said things like that, as if we were still in the 1800s. I had always wanted to ask at least one person spouting that foolishness whom they planned to start a race war with, considering that most families were mixed with several different ones.

“So, Jemistry, would you like to take me up on my offer?”

He is not giving up!

I hesitated to respond. He seemed harmless enough, but so do most serial killers. Most are also charming as all get-out.

“Um, tell you what. I’m not trying to hurt your feelings or anything, but I’m not the most trusting person, as you might suspect.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, that’s kind of evident.”

“I prefer to close out my own tab. I ordered the drinks, so I’ll pay for them. It is kind of noisy in here to talk so I can meet you somewhere else.” I held my index finger up in his face. “But I’m not getting in a car with you. Nor are you getting into mine.”

I already had it in my head that the only thing that talking could possibly lead to was fucking. I would make “arrangements” with him as I had with two other men at the time to come over and have some “drive-by sex” when the urge hit me. I was attracted to him. He was tall and had big feet, so I was guessing that he had a big dick.

What the hell!

“Fair enough.” He threw a twenty on the bar for his beers. “Do you have a place in mind?”

“How about Oya over on Ninth and H?”

“Never heard of it, but I’ll meet you there in a few.”

He stood up. Yeah, he was a giant, but a fine one. I could not help but drop my eyes to see his dick imprint in his slacks. I suppressed a smile.

“Would you allow me to walk you to your car, Jemistry?”

“No, no thank you. I’ll be fine. I’m going to pay for my drinks and then head that way.”

He walked off as he said, “I hope you show.”

I watched him leave out and wondered to myself if I would show up. The key to the entire thing would be to make sure I didn’t catch any feelings. That was always the hard part: having a big heart, desiring to be loved, and trying to avoid falling too hard for a man, especially a man like him. People always said that you have to judge each person by their own character, but it was not easy to keep tossing my heart on the line all the time. Most men I could brush off without a second thought, but there was something different about this one.

Heaven help me!

Loved it!

This book has reinforced my hope, my faith that there is a true love out there for me. It was definitely an eye opener on many topics. One being why some think the way that they do and why some feel their ridiculous actions are justifiable. I'd recommend this book to anyone that has given up on love; to anyone that are stuck in a "generational curse" of believing dysfunctional, disrespectful and/or abusive relationships are "normal;" to anyone who enjoys a unique love story as much as I do. I gave it 5 stars because it is a well-written story with a message. It's more than erotica, it makes you think while being entertained. Loved it!

Awesome read for dating singles and married couples.

As she said in her commentary at the end, this book is an excellent conversation piece for couples. I enjoyed every word and it definitely had me thinking about my dating life and opening up conversation. I would read this again in the future and recommend it to my girlfriends.

As For Jemistry Former Roommate She Needed Help And Im Glad She Got It And Her And Jemistry Can Be Friends Again But Keep Her At A Distance. i Was Suprised Jemistry Opened Her Door To The Ex Wife But They Handled That Well Wish More People Now Can Do That. As For The Other Couple Tevin Bestfriend and soon to be ex wife i didnt like him very much but im glad that jemistry said something it was about time. Great Book

Two powerful dark dramas

Drew Julian’s play THE NICHE is a high-impact, bare bones indictment of American day-to-day existence. Like many of the absurdist plays of the early 1960s, it rips the mask off of our mundane struggles, revealing an existence of complex loss and betrayal. A country boy comes to the city. Finds love. Finds a career. Loses it all in the instant it takes to wake up from a dream. Which is what the play resembles. An absurdist dream play in a gut-wrenching labyrinth. Strindberg writing an episode of THE OFFICE. It is a quick and exciting read with stark humor and emotional horror.

Julian’s second work, THE HEART YOU WERE BORN WITH, is another heartbreaker of a play, THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER wearing emotional spikes and slashing with a psychological baseball bat. The play has so many intricate and fascinating twists and turns that it is hard to reveal any of the plot without unleashing a pack of barking spoiler alerts. Suffice it to say that the emotionally and perhaps otherwise crippled WILL moves into his best friend’s home and raises havoc with BOBBY and his in-house girlfriend KELLI. Like THE NICHE, the play has a surreal, nightmarish quality, although it is a little more grounded in pseudo-realism, less Ionescoesque, more Sam Shepardish. Through these tightly drawn, quirky characters Julian puts you through a kind of devine agony that forces you to examine your personal reality and question its fundamental validity. And if that ain’t great theatre, I don’t know what is.

Drew Julian’s TWO PLAYS is a brace of astounding, powerful works best read in one-sitting on a rainy day when you have the time and the emotional strength for anger, pain, and self-reflection; a rainy day well-spent.

Funny and poignant!

Drew's plays are perhaps the wittiest plays I have ever seen or read. The Niche had me rolling on the floor. His wit is so razor sharp, so character driven, so poignant, that you don't even realize how he has you in his grip until you are swept away. I highly recommend this play to anyone who appreciates the great wit of Albee. You will not be disappointed.

Simon then exhibited his textiles at Premiere Vision in Paris and worked in Paris creating trend and forecasting brochures for clients in Europe, Japan and America. As a freelance woven textile designer and stylist, Simon's clients have included Vivienne Westwood, Christian Lacroix, Missoni, Simply Red, All Saints, BBC and London Fashion Week. Simon now runs the successful undergraduate Fashion degree at Northbrook College, UK. Simon has also recently completed a series of lectures on research and design methodologies in Shanghai, China, as well as at various UK universities.

Required Fashion Reading

I graduated from one of the top fashion schools and realized that this book open my eyes even further to research and design. It's written for the serious fashion person: who has had training and wants to learn more. It explains various ways to research for your collection and how other designers work in their croquis books. Even if you did graduate from fashion school, this book shows you more possibilities in design. The price is good, so what are you waiting for?

a good beginners book on fashion design

I'm just starting studying fashion design and looking for some good books about it. fortunately i found one "basic fashion design:research and design". Really a good book specially for beginners. it give insight on how to begin research and to actually begin designing.It feature a lot of case studies and sketches by actual student and some professional designers. Any one studying fashion design will benefit on this book so much, and maybe someday will be famous.

nice book

Nice and clear book, very easy to read with a lot of images accompanieing the text.
There's a broad scope of subjects covered in the book which makes it especially usable for everyone new in fashion or just starting up. It doesn't provide very much in-depth new information for the experienced fashion designer, so I would especially recommend this book to students, people interested in a career in fashion or people who are just starting to design.

Seedless, sexless bananas evolved from a wild inedible fruit first cultivated in Southeast Asia, and was probably the apple that got Adam and Eve in trouble in the Garden of Eden. From there the fruit traveled to Africa and across the Pacific, arriving on U.S. shores probably with the Europeans in the 15th century. However, the history of the banana turned sinister as American businessmen caught on to the marketability of this popular, highly perishable fruit then grown in Jamaica. Thanks to the building of the railroad through Costa Rica by the turn of the century, the United Fruit company flourished in Central America, its tentacles extending into all facets of government and industry, toppling banana republics and igniting labor wars. Meanwhile, the Gros Michel variety was annihilated by a fungus called Panama disease (Sigatoka), which today threatens the favored Cavendish, as Koeppel sounds the alarm, shuttling to genetics-engineering labs from Honduras to Belgium. More information on the banana than you can shake a banana-shaped stick at

I read some articles recently about the potential extinction of the banana and I went to get a better understanding of what is really going on. After reading this book, I know more about the banana, it's many varieties, and the blight of Panama disease that affects this food around the globe. I now know that a banana is technically an herb and that the ubiquitous Cavendish banana outsells every variety of apple and orange combined. Banana cultivation and trade has also had a significant impact on world history. I learned about all of that and more in this well-written, easy read of a book. Mission accomplished.

Yes We Have No Bananas Today

Dan Koeppel has written an informative fast-paced book detailing the rise and fall of the global banana industry, bringing us along over decades of conflict over land ownership, labor's share of profits, rights of owners of capital, property rights, and self-governance. We start at the very beginning since some believe that the Garden of Eden was the place to grow bananas and not apples. Bananas were transformed in the 19th century from a local fruit to a global market by some adventurous, ruthless, and clever entrepreneurs who overcame issues of distance and spoiling to put cheap bananas in every grocery store in the US. Today the descendants of these pioneering plantation managers, railroad tycoons, and shipping magnates run Dole and Chiquita and still supply us with bananas.

Any venture this large and profitable will undoubtedly lead to arguments over the division of profits. Central American politicians and farm workers were not in agreement with the share taken by Chiquita. The international banana companies (Chiquita had eliminated most of its competition through punitive trade wars and acquisition) felt their property rights, capital, and technology were at risk. In Honduras, Guatemala, and Ecuador this became a real fight in most cases as politicians brought in the military and covert forces to figure it all out.

The other interesting sections here deal with the inherent difficulties in growing and breeding bananas as they are seedless (we would not care to eat them as much otherwise) and sexless (they dont reproduce as much as grow into an adjacent plant). The first bananas to be globally commercialized were the Gros Michael, which ultimately was replaced by today's Cavendish. The Gros Michael disappeared due to Panama disease and other ailments despite the industry's efforts which included endless replanting, field flooding, and application of enough chemicals to turn workers blue.

For many years various researchers have worked on the next generation banana, as the Cavendish itself is subject to the same diseases that ultimately did in the Gros Michael. The Cavendish was selected as it was less suspectible but Keoppel claims its days are numbered as well. Only in certain especially forelorn sections of impoverished Africa (such as Uganda where the economy is banana based) are genetically modified bananas grown. Those of us in the west may ultimately need to eat GM bananas or no bananas.

This is a good informative book for both the general audience and the trade. Koeppel is an experienced writer who knows how to break down concepts like how bananas propogate and how diseases spread. He is especially talented at tying in the historical and political content. His evidence to support the impending demise of the Cavendish hypothesis is a bit weak. His bias against big powerful industry shows at times but that is probabaly healthy.

Light read, dark topic

This is a journalistic account of the political horrors hidden behind the popularity of this bland fruit. For Americans who don't think twice about the difference between picking up an apple or a banana at the grocery store, this book will be thought-provoking.
A lot of the material in it is controversial, however, which makes sharing sources all the more important -- and the book lacks any real documentation or information about the evidence the author uses.
For those interested in the environmental elements of this story (including the banana blight that threatens to bring the long reign of the Cavendish to an end), this book will not be satisfying.
There are more serious, more scholarly books out there (about the United Fruit Company, for example), but for those who are ready to trust the author and want a very easy, casual read, this will fit the bill.
