D. M. PIRRO is the Equipment Builder and OEM Manager, ExxonMobil Corporation, Fairfax, Virginia. The author or contributing editor of several scholarly articles on synthetic lubes, environmental awareness applications, grease technology, lubricant interchangeability, and oil analysis, Mr. Pirro is a Certified Lubrication Specialist and a member of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers and the Association of Manufacturing Technology. He received the B.S. degree (1978) in mechanical engineering and the B.A. degree (1978) in business administration from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

A. A. WESSOL is a part-time Lubrication Consultant for the ExxonMobil Corporation in Manassas, Virginia. Mr. Wessol retired from the Mobil Corporation after 24 years in various advanced technical positions. The author or coauthor of numerous professional papers on the environmental aspects of lubrication, plant engineering, hydraulics, and pneumatics, he received the B.S. degree (1972) in mathematics, physics, and chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Nothing new or exciting here

Ewan Mawdsley has written a book which does what it says. It recounts the first 12 days of December which tell us how the Second World War became a truly global conflict. However it simply retells stories which have been told over and over again. No new interpretations are offered and there is no attempt to offer new insights into the situation at the day.

I will give him points for creativity but the book itself does nothing to change my view of the war and didn't offer me any new insights.

Interesting Insights

Its long been debated if Franklin Roosevelt had clear forewarning of the Japanese attack in December 1941. As Mawdsley's book makes clear, Roosevelt, Churchill and others did have a great deal of information on Japanese intent; however, the attack was expected in Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Pearl Harbor was truly a surprise and brought America into what was now a world war. Hitler's subsequent declaration of war on the U.S. took the gloves off on what had previously been America's limited support for Britain and the Soviet Union. While the United States had slowly been rearming for several years, December 7th stunned the nation into a total war footing. The loss of battleships was a shock for a country who's only significant military force was its navy. Recovery was quick and by June 1942, the Japanese were in retreat having lost four of their six irreplaceable large fleet carriers at the Battle of Midway. The German's took much longer to turn back and it was the Soviets who were the main weapon in this effort (supplied with a large quantity of American trucks, boots, food and other equipment). Mawdsley appropriately focuses attention on Hitler's attack on Moscow in the fall of 1941 and the Soviet counter-attacks in early December as the start of the eventual German defeat.

"December 1941: Twelve Days That Began A World War" is a useful addition to a library of World War II books. On it's own, the work would not provide sufficient information for a reader without a broader frame of reference. It lacks depth of coverage as it moves from Washington to London to Berlin to Tokyo to Moscow and elsewhere. It comes across a bit like reading a good daily newspaper for twelve days. Still, I would recommend this brief (by World War II standards at slightly more than 300 pages) book to an informed reader.

Incredibly accurate and informative.

This book will show you important facts about WW II, that you are unlikely to find in other history books.. imagination was not shone in the writing of this. An incredible amount of time must have been spent involved in the research for facts and figures. If you are a history buff, you will want to read this book.

Great Teaching Resource

I've been teaching Hamlet for 15 years. I picked up this book about 8 or so years ago. I love it. Each left-hand page has an explanation of difficult or archaic words or phrases that appear on the right-hand page. This has really helped my students not be quite as intimidated. It's been great addition to my teaching resources.

Please Don't Laugh - Nearly Life-changing!

I was a too-serious biochemistry pre-med student in 1980 when a dull professor with a dull-sounding class (Computer Modeling of Biological Systems) made me read this book. The writing style is so dry and calculated you can almost hear the language creak and the subject is at the same time simple but difficult to grasp - and no, that's not a contradiction in terms, trust me. But a chapter or two into this book the scales fell from my eyes. I had the true-believer's reaction of, "why doesn't everyone know this!? Why isn't this truth shouted from the rooftops!?" The truth in the book comes mainly from Alan Turing's discoveries in machine theory, a field he basically invented. But the author's achievement is to set forth these ideas, and many others developed later through his work and that of others, in clear, concise words - no mean feat with these subtle but extremely powerful concepts. Previous reviewer David C. Hay hit the nail on the head with his comment that "the insights into the true nature of the way things work are as significant as those of Newton or Einstein". Overstatement? If you are reading this review on a computer (yes, you are), you can thank the concepts in this book - they are that fundamental to the development of computers. As I say, the insights are mostly Turing's, but Ashby lays them out in a way that the dedicated reader of moderate intelligence (like myself, for example: I'm no Alan Turing!) can grasp without too much effort. The book's approach might have been softened to include some historical perspective or more concrete examples, but the author chose to refine his message to a distilled essence as clear and powerful as lightning. While almost all my biochemistry textbooks have become outdated and discarded through new developments in that science this slim volume still sits on my bookshelf - I can see it right now. A 40-year-old book as fresh as the day it was written! Read it at your peril: being exposed to completely novel ideas may change your thinking - or even your life!

In a very clear, concise manner, Ashby explains the laws of nature that control the way systems work -- all systems, whether they be organisms, corporations, or governments. His insights into the true nature of the way things work are as significant as those of Newton or Einstein.

Since its creation as a new field of science, Systems thinking has influenced most other areas, including the fields I'm active in myself, such as psychology and social sciences.
This out-of-print book is considered so important by the people of the Principia Cybernetica Project that they want this book to reach as an wide audience as possible. As their website indicates: "W. Ross Ashby is one of the founding fathers of both cybernetics and systems theory. He developed such fundamental ideas as the homeostat, the law of requisite variety, the principle of self-organization, and the principle of regulatory models."
Of course, nothing goes above getting your hand on a *real* copy of this book, but the next best solution is getting the free e-book version which the Principia Cybernetica Project published on their web site with the agreement of the Ashby estate (the copyright holders). Justinian and Theodora- a good source

Justinian and Theodora is a good book with lots of information. I personally think it should have more about Justinian's early life. It's also just a tad bit confusing at times. Other than that, though, it's a great source for information on not only Justinian and Theodora, but also other well-known and not-so-well-known characters of ancient Rome such as Anastasius, Belisarius, and many others. You would do well to read this narrative if you need information on Justinian and/or Theodora, or are just interested in ancient Rome.

Not much about Justinian or Throdora

I found out very little about the people themselves. The book sticks to the known timeline and actions as reported mainly by writers who didn't like them. It is a little like trying to understand President Obama by describing the history of the Affordable Health Act!

a solid history of the original "power couple"

_Justinian and Theodora_ is a bit dated (it was first published in 1987), but there is much to recommend about it. There are a number of photographs (over 100, several in color), and the historical context of Justinian's reign is both easy to understand and detailed. Where there are historical controversies (as with Procopius), Browning is intellecutally honest enough to state them, but also enough of an academic to evaluate them and explain his reasoning on the veracity of the statements.

I was particularly impressed with Browning's disucssion around the controversies within the Byzantine Empire of Justinian - religious as well as socio-economic, and the larger political pressures Justinian was facing as the Roman empire in the west was disintegrating. Theodora's role as the "power behind the throne" made for riveting reading as well - for me, she is among the most interesting women in history. I had hoped, however, that more depth had been given to the conflict in the east with the Sassanids; much more attention is given to Belisarius' conquests in north Africa and Italy which is common to histories of this period. I had also hoped that more light was shed on Theodora's role (if any) in Justinian's quest to reconquor these parts of the empire.

For those with a passing familiarity with the period, there is an abundance of information that is both fascinating and new here. The novice will similarly be impressed. A recommended read.

An excellent follow up to Assertiveness for Earth Angels.

Doreen's "Sparkle Book" is an excellent companion to Assertiveness for Earth Angels.
The Sparkle book is a stand alone book too.
In her new book, Doreen thoroughly researches the links between trauma, drama and histamine.
Understanding the links between these issues, and how they impact your mood and relationships, was a "light bulb" moment for me.
What I loved about this book and most of Doreen's books is how she makes information accessible and easy to understand.
I found the drama survey on her www.dontletanythingdullyoursparkle.com website to be very helpful too!
I loved how Doreen really helped with finding so many solutions and gave so many helpful strategies for dealing with anxiety and depression and relationship issues.
I felt more at peace as a result of reading this book and implementing some of the strategies she suggests.
There is a free audio download that is still available on her website if you purchased the book. It contains her powerful angel therapy techniques for healing drama.

Powerful words to help heal those dealing with trauma and drama in their lives

While usually recognized for one of her many books, or card decks, related to angels, Doreen Virtue’s latest book, “Don’t Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle”, uses a blend of her personal wisdom and her formal education (she has various degrees in counseling psychology) to help people ‘break free of negativity and drama’ in their personal lives and in their relationships.

I think it is important to say that this book is not written like a psychology textbook or like a speech from the Dr.’s office, rather Doreen communicates on a heart level that makes it easy for the reader to understand the negative consequences that drama has in our lives and the consequences if we don’t deal with it. In her words, “Drama, a secondary pattern following trauma, is a form of self-sabotage and self-punishment that is highly addictive.”

The premise is that when we have a traumatic experience in life, and the definition of a ‘traumatic experience’ will vary from person to person, our brain produces chemicals to help us deal with the trauma; however, if we don’t deal effectively with the experience the potential is there for us to become addicted to these chemicals. “Our brains are remarkable, ingeniously creating chemicals to insulate and protect us from pain. The trouble is, some of these brain chemicals feel so good that they become addictive.” The addiction to these chemicals then causes us to seek out other situations, forms of entertainment, relationships etc. that stress us out and give us a chemical cocktail high that will eventually cause us physical harm. This trauma-drama process, and a quick and easy questionnaire to help the reader determine their ‘drama quotient’, are all discussed in the first section of the book.

In the second section of “Don’t Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle” Doreen shares numerous ways in which we can return to health and ‘regain our sparkle.’ Specifically, Doreen gives us: ways to reduce stress, information on foods that assist in the healing process, ideas on creating a healthier living environment, natural ways to deal with depression and anxiety, and some surprising information about yoga and how certain forms/types of yoga can actually hinder our health.

The third section of the book deals specifically with regaining our sparkle as we interact with others: whether it is family, friends or co-workers. With so many of the people in our society being addicted to drama we need to ensure that we are in nurturing environments, or that we develop the skills to deal with adverse relationships and not get caught up in destructive patterns.

Regardless of the level of trauma we have experienced in life, all three sections in “Don’t Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle” provide lots of useful and life-improving information. Even if the reader doesn’t feel that they have personally experienced trauma themselves, this book will help the reader gain an understanding of why somebody in their life might be behaving in a self-destructive manner. In other words, this is a powerful book because it can help the reader heal themselves or it can help the reader be more aware and empathetic to the struggles of the people around them.

If the information in this book is not sufficient for the reader, or for those wishing to get more detailed information about some of the studies mentioned by Doreen, there is an extensive bibliography provided as well.

As a closing remark, I want to restate that this book is not one of those ‘heavy’, hard-to-read, self-help books. Doreen Virtue’s uplifting writing style and her lively, sparkly personality very much shines through on these pages and it is very apparent that she is using her own challenges as a foundation for helping people overcome the trauma-drama in their lives. Even if you aren’t dealing with any issues personally, I believe that there will be somebody in your life that will benefit from the words in this book.

Love her and her other works.This one, did not appeal to me.

This book is by a woman that I absolutely love to listen to. I have some of her cards and other books. This one I had a difficult time with because it was a bit too extreme for me. Our diets are already so limited. To limit what we considered healthy food may ring true for her and may help several people, but it does not come near to being true for me. I don't like having to have a problem with every single thing on this planet. It is getting tiring. Be afraid of this. Don't do that. Don't act this way. Feel your feelings, but don't be like that because no one will want to be near you....but just be you. Some mixed messages. Sometimes talking about how to free ourselves or solve problems can create more problems for some. I just can't get past the mixed messages of trying to alleviate fear by using fear. How to be honest and not deny your feelings... but don't really act like that. There is some condemnation in this book and some love.

I believe the intention was to help people gain insight into their own experiences and emotions and also to help gain insight into other people's behavior. I could feel the author's personal feelings. They are judgmental and it is hard to see this as a loving book when I can feel her feelings. The anger was there. The judgment too. The denial of that unlike part of us and others is in this book. The part that wants to say "I accept myself and others" but doesn't really accept them.
