Arpeggios, Rhythms, and Scales, by Mike Laird

As a technique builder for jazz improvisation on the violin, this book is comprehensive. It provides: the arpeggios for 7th chords with useful fingerings, jazz scales, and rhythm exercises to develop technique. Improvisation is often taught with various scales. In addition, this book teaches the 7th arpeggios of jazz chords in several positions to help navigate the fingerboard and get to chord tones. A short jazz theory section describes the reasons that the 7th arpeggio is essential to improvisation. You can use these notes in many sequences and rhythms to improvise jazz music. The exercises are appropriate for beginners with good shifting skills. Three octaves are provided, but beginners can start with one or two octaves. Since students of jazz violin often do not have a teacher for specific jazz improvisation technique, this book provides useful, wide-ranging suggestions to help a developing jazz violin improviser produce the sounds expected in jazz and improve their musical techniques.

Useful scale book for jazz violin
By Frito-Lay
I think this book is a useful contribution to the jazz violin literature, and I recommend it. I personally would have preferred a comb binding so that it would lie flat on my music stand. I would prefer wider margins too. I also think the use of the "jazz font" is not really the best idea, as the fingerings can be hard to read in places. The first few keys have "bebop blues" studies that are very cool because they show you how the scale and arpeggio forms can be strung together into a line. They're all in the same genre and only for a few keys, but they give you an idea how to use what you're learning. There should have been much more of that kind of thing. Another reviewer complained that it's just a scale fingering book, and that's a fair criticism, especially for a book that bills itself as "fundamental techniques for jazz improvisation" because there really isn't much of that. One could say that once you have the scales and arpeggios in your fingers, there's not really anything special about the violin in terms of improv, it's just another horn, so any kind of "jazz technique" stuff would be redundant of what is already out there. But I think Laird should have maybe backed off on the heavy load of scales and instead showed more about how to use them by showing some patterns, turnarounds, and other riffs. Violinists have been trained that studies are good for you, so we'll eat that stuff up. The scales are all in three-octave format, even though I really doubt anyone is going to go that high in keys like F major which will take you near the end of the fingerboard on the E string. I think instead of printing in multiple sets of fingerings for most of the scales, it would have been better for Laird to take a few pages and explain HOW one works out fingerings on the violin, although my guess is that anyone who is ready for this book will already know this. Another pet peeve is church modes like Lydian and Myxolydian, and what he calls "dorian minor" and "dominant bebop" etc. Personally, if I see a CMaj7#11 chord, I know that I'll be fine in the C major scale with F# instead of F, and if I see a C-7 chord, I know I have to flat the 3rd and 7th. But I'm pretty steeped in piano theory so maybe that comes more naturally to me that way.

Valuable Method Book
By Rebeca Boyd
I have taught students at varying levels with this book. Just as Flesch's Scale Studies is a useful tool for classical technique, this book is a valuable practice tool for a jazz violinist's fundamental skills. Chords, fingerings, rhythm exercises and improvisation exercises are combined together, and you won't find that in any other practice book. If you want to improvise on the violin, you need the skills that are developed by working consistently with this book.

Speechless
By Thomas Harper
There are good, mediocre, and useless music instruction books. This one belongs in the latter category. It includes basically only an agglomeration of scales, which could be pulled out from any scale generator on the web, and there is no relevant narrative / study guidance, etc. The provided fingerings are almost useless, as they are extremely diffult to read (until you have read it, you could almost figure it out by your self). The introduction includes some basic music and jazz theory, which is only accessible to people who have already an excellent grasp of Jazz harmonics. So in the end, it might be partially useful for the very few advanced Jazz violin teachers in the country, but they probably don't need such a book. I have purchased hundreds of books from Amazon, and this is the first one, which I return. I feel sorry for the author, who probably spent a lot of time to put this treatise together.
