About the Author

Heidi Harbers is an associate professor in the department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. She teaches courses in clinical phonetics,� speech sound disorders, written language development , school-age language disorders, and early intervention.� Her clinical and research interests include phonological awareness and literacy skills in preschool and school-age children with and without communication disorders as well as efficacy in phonological intervention. She has presented her clinical research at state, national and international conferences. Prior to joining the faculty at ISU, Harbers taught at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.�

The exercises in the book would be really helpful if ...

The exercises in the book would be really helpful if the answer key wasn't wrong as often as it is. It makes it confusing for students trying to learn the material.

Great as a refresher

This workbook was simply phenomenal to help me review what I learned a couple of years ago in my phonology class. It has great exercises that include the answers in the back. My only warning is that I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has no experience with the IPA chart. The book starts with differentiating sounds in their normal spelling as opposed to introducing the sound as it would appear when transcribed. Personally, I think any person starting off would find it confusing, there were times that I would have to transcribe a word before I could figure out an answer! Definitely a great refresher, but not so much as an intro book.
