Craving Flight, by Tamsen Parker

Tzipporah Berger is thirty-seven and single, which is practically unheard of in the Orthodox Jewish community she now calls home. Her increasing religiosity and need for kink may have broken up her first marriage, but she’s decided it’s time to try again. And the rabbi’s wife has just the man in mind.

Elan Klein is the neighborhood butcher whose intimidating size and gruff manner hint at a deliciously forceful personality. But BDSM isn’t exactly something you discuss during an Orthodox courtship. Will a marriage to Elan solidify her place in the community that she loves and provide the domination and pain Tzipporah craves or will she forever have to rely on flights of fancy to satisfy her needs?

There's No Pleasing Some People (And Other Thoughts on a 2-Star Review)
By Zenobia
One of the first things I do when purchasing a new book is to read the lowest reviews. If I can stomach those complaints, I might still give it a shot. Most of the time, I find that the complaints are valid and I should have listened. This time is NOT one of those times. This book is five stars by every measure: quality of writing, originality of story, and sexiness.

One complaint by a reader that there were a few missing commas, and therefore this was not a professionally edited work. Hmm, I do not remember any missing commas, but I do know that commas are sometimes more art than science. Moreover, many "professionally edited" books these days are far from perfect. Craving Flight more than meets the standard of most traditionally published books. So the writing? Five stars.

Another complaint is about the story, which simply proves there is no pleasing some people. This is the most original BDSM novella in years, certainly since the Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz. (By the way, if you like that series, imagine Sren as an Orthodox Jewish butcher and you'll be on your way to understanding Elan. There are significant differences, of course, and Elan is his own man. Still, you'll see what I mean.)

Readers complain about not understanding Tzipporah's journey to Orthodox Judaism, but I thought this part of the story was well-developed. Same holds true with how they were matched together. One valid question, however, is how Elan became such a proficient dom. I wondered that myself, but then again this is a novella with limited space for backstory. Instead of doing a half-way job of it, Parker just stays silent on the question. Moreover, this was a first-person story; the only way to have gotten this information across would have been through a conversation with Tzipporah. Since they are each other's second marriage (he is a widower and she is divorced), having Elan speak extensively about his dead wife who died of cancer would have been a real mood-killer for me. It would have also been unkind to Tzipporah. So his skills are a question that must be left unanswered. Readers may improvise in their minds. Go ahead. Imagine it for a minute. I'll wait.

The final story complaint was that not every Orthodox ritual was examined, such as washing up before meals. Are you yawning yet? Because that is what you would be doing. There is plenty of great research that went into this novella, and for an outsider like me, I thought the balance of religious context and story was perfect. The religious elements were treated with great respect, actually, and the Jewish characters were given personalities beyond their Judaism. Some were wonderful and generous; others were small-minded. Welcome to any small, close-knit community. They are humans, and Parker wrote them as such.

Could the elements have been expanded into a full-length novel, answering some of the complaints above? Yes, but it was not necessary. The introduction to the book tells us that this was a promotional exercise based on someone else's prompt challenge, and as such it was meant to be a novella from the beginning. If it leaves us wanting more, then it has done it's job.

Finally, for the va-va-va-voom factor, there is some serious chemistry between Elan and Tzipporah. The scene where she comes back from the mikveh (ritual bath)...well, I'll leave it to you to find out.

Because, see, you can find out. Without risk, even. This novella is free! I've read lots of junk that is free, but this is a book I would have paid money for and still felt that I was getting a good deal. I'm checking out Parker's backlist as I write this...

Fly, Little Bird - Fabulous read!!
By Eleanor
Judaism is on one hand – very complex, and on the other – very very simple. The religion itself, probably just as all old religions, is plain. It’s based on honest and sometimes nave values and on the purest form of worshipping God. Then you have all the years following the origin of Judaism, and all the additional rules and traditions that make it, to outsider (and more often than not – insiders) seem like it was dropped from outer-space.

You’re probably wondering why I’m babbling about religion when reviewing a BDSM novella. Well… first of all – I’m Jewish and as one who’s as far from religion as possible in my culture, I still know a lot about it and am mostly fascinated with the little intricacies of it. Secondly, I’m a professional reader and the combination of BDSM and the insanely closed off lifestyle Orthodox Jews lead – it just made me have to read this story.

Tzipporah and Elan’s story is unique in so many ways I’m not even going to try and touch them all. I’m also not going to explain the traditions and reasoning behind everything in this story. If you’re interested (and you should be) just read it. It’s worth your two hours. I promise.

For them both, their marriage is a second round. Elan is a widower and Tzipporah is a divorcee (a huge no-no, btw, in their culture). Yet, they’re matched together and somehow, they hit it off.

I was mesmerized by Tzipporah’s openness when asked what she likes. I was beyond shocked that Elan was more than willing to provide her with her heart’s desire. I was astonished by the easiness they both experienced delving into their physical relationship. But that’s not the point in the story.

The point is breaking past the emotional barrier of their relationship. Of each of them not truly believing they deserve the other, or is enough for the other. I think that in this – Tzipporah’s efforts were brilliant, even if a little unorthodox.

Their love is felt through the words from the very first scene of them together, and it just grows and grows throughout the story.

I feel myself lucky to get to read amazing novellas so often. I’ve said it before, but this is a case where stressing my thought on novellas is important: reading a novella where a reader gets a complete experience is rare. Creating a world, explaining the aspects of it (even through the actual plot) and plotting an emotional story is no easy feat when writing a novel. So when an author manages to do that with a novella – it’s amazing and notable.

I want to give a little spoiler, which isn’t really a spoiler, but still – Tzippora in Hebrew is derived from the word Tzipor (=bird). Knowing this little fact made me swoon at various parts in the story. I really wish it for you as well.

Tamsen Parker wrote an accurate depiction of extremely orthodox religious life and incorporated into it unorthodox lifestyle. She did it beautifully and passionately and it shows – in the descriptions, the terminology and the delicate way the interpersonal relationships in this culture is written.

Uncommon & Powerful
By The Lusty Literate
Craving Flight is one of the most unique, fascinating, stirring, realistic and thoughtful BDSM romances that I've ever read. I'm kind of astounded. The sex was so good—intimate, meaningful, emotional and blazing hot! This uncommon and powerful romance stayed with me well after the final page.
