The Beginning of Everything, by Robyn Schneider

Robyn Schneider's The Beginning of Everything is a witty and heart-wrenching teen novel that will appeal to fans of books by John Green and Ned Vizzini, novels such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and classics like The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye.

Varsity tennis captain Ezra Faulkner was supposed to be homecoming king, but that was before—before his girlfriend cheated on him, before a car accident shattered his leg, and before he fell in love with unpredictable new girl Cassidy Thorpe.

As Kirkus Reviews said in a starred review, "Schneider takes familiar stereotypes and infuses them with plenty of depth. Here are teens who could easily trade barbs and double entendres with the characters that fill John Green's novels."

Funny, smart, and including everything from flash mobs to blanket forts to a poodle who just might be the reincarnation of Jay Gatsby, The Beginning of Everything is a refreshing contemporary twist on the classic coming-of-age novel—a heart-wrenching story about how difficult it is to play the part that people expect, and how new beginnings can stem from abrupt and tragic endings.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Ezra Faulkner believes that everyone has a tragedy waiting to happen that will be their life-changing moment. In the summer before seventh grade, his best friend, Toby, had his moment when he inadvertently caught the severed head of a boy who was decapitated on a ride in Disneyland. Ezra ended his friendship with Toby after that. Now 17, Ezra encounters his own tragic watershed event: he finds his girlfriend cheating on him and then has a car accident that ends his tennis career. He returns to school for his last year a broken boy who has shunned his jock friends and just wants to make it through life unnoticed. By reconnecting with Toby and developing a relationship with Cassidy, a new girl who has a secretive past and home life, Ezra gets the chance to remake himself into someone who lives rather than just exists. Though Ezra's old friends are depicted as stereotypes, they help to emphasize the attributes of his new friends, who are quirky, smart, and funny. This is a wonderfully told story. The dialogue moves the plot along at a fast pace, and Ezra, with all his flaws, is a character to whom readers can relate. Teens won't want to put this one down until the mystery of Cassidy is unraveled at the end.-Elizabeth Kahn, Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, Jefferson, LAα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
*Starred Review* The way Ezra Faulkner sees it, everyone gets one great tragedy, after which life should roll on predictably. His middle-school best friend, Toby, gets his when a roller-coaster accident brands him a social misfit, and Ezra gets his a week before junior prom, when he, the tennis star and class president shoo-in, is injured by a distracted driver. When senior year begins, Ezra and his destroyed leg slide easily into a new social circle, eschewing the surface attempts of former friends to stay connected and instead joining Toby on the debate team. That’s where he meets Cassidy, a beguiling transfer student who helps Ezra discover his new self. To Ezra, it’s an idyllic relationship, so when it collapses, his worldview collapses, too—hadn’t he just recovered from his one great tragedy? Throughout, Ezra reads The Great Gatsby and alludes to parallels found in the classic novel. His story of self-discovery and reinvention is told in past tense, providing just enough distance for bits of reflection and subtle foreshadowing, which serve to enrich characters and build suspense. This thought-provoking novel about smart kids doing interesting things will resonate with the John Green contingent, as it is tinged with sadness, high jinks, wry humor, and philosophical pondering in equal measures. Grades 8-11. --Heather Booth

but alas as stated in The Great Gatsby, "All the bright precious things fade so ...
By Darla
This book was well-written, and the voice throughout the text is strong. The development of the plot was slow, and it seemed that many events which occurred were "extras" or "empty" rather than meaningful events which would intensify the story line.

Personally, I think that art is meant to make you "feel" emotions, and this text definitely made me feel a range of emotions in regards to some of the behavior exhibited by the characters. Erza Faulkner most certainly experienced tragedy, though I do not think that this tragedy is anyway attached to the car accident or high school drama.

The author hits on some significant issues in modern day society such as: mental illness, social pressures or anxieties (pressure of maintaining the "status quo" and the damage it causes developing minds/perhaps even traumatizing).

I wish there would have been more resolution for the main character(s)...perhaps more of a healing aspect for a particular character, but alas as stated in The Great Gatsby, "All the bright precious things fade so fast, and they don't come back."

Overall, it was a pretty good read.

John Green-y

I chose this book for an English project and I kind of regret it. It's a really good book, I read it non stop for 2 days, but once you're done with it, it's silly. If you look back and think about everything you've just read, you'll be disappointed at yourself for being so engaged. It's the first book I read by Robyn Schneider and I don't know if I'm gonna read any more. If I'm gonna read young adult novels again I'm probably gonna to John Green, David Levithan or Giovanna Fletcher.

Well worth the read
By Allygyrl
I will be rereading this book. It was a great story line. I loved how for once the teenagers in this book didn't talk like they were in their 30's and 40's or drop F bombs every other word. While there is some profanity, it's so minuscule that you barely notice. I LOVED how the mom was actually a mom and taught her son manners! I love how there was no ridiculously over the top sex scenes, in fact there is only a reference to one or two moments that are written nicely. I love how realistic it was because not every happy ending has to end the same way as every other book you read. This story had a bittersweet happy ending and it left you wanting to know more about what happens to everyone and yet satisfied for now. I really hope to see more from this author. So, if you're looking for a decent, clean book that you can feel good about reading, this is my recommendation.

This is really just a phrase book
By A Customer
This is one of the only affordable cassette-book sets for learning Persian, so in that sense, it is worth buying. However, a lot of the taped portion is just what you might find in a phrase book. There aren't any dialogues in the book and the spoken passages sound extremely stilted. It is not of the same quality as the more recently produced books in the "Colloquial Series".

Much More Helpful Than I Expected
By Arietta Kincaid
I purchased this book to use as a guide for students who needed help with industrial-setting report writing. It was a bit more than they needed or could digest at the time. It certainly is a college level text! Since I couldn't easily use it in the work setting I had in mind, I kept it for myself and am glad I did.

I particularly have found useful the chapters on the physical preparation of reports, since those are applicable to workbooks, and books and articles as well. The material on research--using email surveys for example--was very helpful and interesting.

This is not Report Writing For Dummies! It can be intimidating at first thumb-through. But it is a comprehensive look at an extremely wide variety of writing and presentation situations in business. It would be very helpful for almost any supervisor or manager, or for authors, trainers and teachers.

Great photos and main points for each continent
By Kitti
I am a homeschooler, so I am always looking for neat school books that don't really look so much like text books. I like the easy-to-follow organization of this book. It gives an appropriate amount of repetition and predictability for the very young. Each set of four pages (per continent) follows the pattern: Outline drawing of the continent with political boundaries of countries present, Brief text with the relative size of the continent highlighted and another fact or two, and a lovely two-page spread of a stand-out representative photo of a sight within that continent. The vocabulary used in the book is a bit advanced for first graders (populous, currency, dominated, etc) and would preclude most from reading it alone. With that being said, it does encourage vocabulary development if the words are explained (again taking advantage of the repetition).
We have way too many choices of devices, from the Kindle to a Fire tablet, to a traditional laptop, to a desktop. It is perfect on our touchscreen 15.6 inch laptop, with color photos that span the screen and great resolution. It would lose something for me on a smaller screen, though smaller hands and independence indicate that it will ultimately be read there.
Honestly, this book is for my daughter, who is kindergartening at 5. I am strongly considering having my 10 year old work with her on it, because it will provide review and quick facts for him as well. It gives enough tidbits to start the conversation, and will be one of numerous resources used for learning about the world. It fits well with her current attention span, which I hope lengthens a bit in the next 2 years. As an introductory overview, it fits the bill, and the beauty of the photos definitely kept my attention to see what would be next.
Overall: Lovely short book to introduce the continents. Should definitely be useful to those with younger children, as it is short enough to keep interest and allows them to read the pictures and become familiar with the maps.
Last word: Ignore the 1st Grade label... use it when it suits where your child is! (I would suggest read-alongs.) Enjoy and discuss it together... I am so excited to have this book to come back to throughout our studies, hope you will find it useful and beautiful as well.
I received the Kindle edition of this book for free in return for my honest review.

ISt Grade Geography
By Pippa
The first Grade Geography book has a striking cover with a few significant items included on the cover itself. It's a small book. I noticed the pages were not numbered. However, I quite like the way the contents of the book are organized. This type of clear-cut organization would help a first grader grasp the contents easily. I also love the pictures in the book especially the one of Mount Everest. I got this mainly for my grandson who is in first grade. When I showed him the book, his eyes lit up. He readily recognized some of the pictures on the cover. I am glad I ordered this book. I received mine free in exchange for my honest and sincere review.

Great introduction to the continents, beautiful pictures
By Duck MD
First grade Geography: Continents of the World. Warning this review contains spoilers. I really enjoy this book. The progression thru the different continents makes sense. This book is written at a level that most first graders will be able to understand. I think that this book does a great job at introducing all 7 continents. Let’s begin the journey of exploring this book and see what it has to offer. This book starts out with the definition of a continent. Then it lists the 7 continents on earth. This list does not reflect the order that the continents are discussed, although I really wish it had.
Asia is the first continent discussed. I really like that on one side of the page they show all of Asia, then on the other half they give some facts about the continent. They repeat this pattern throughout the book. I find it to be quite helpful. The page following the description is a beautiful high quality picture of something that the continent is recognized for. There is a caption on the picture so you know exactly what it is a picture of, and you learn cool facts.
Europe is the next continent we discuss. The facts talk about currency, and that Europe is home to the world’s smallest country, the Vatican. The picture chosen for this continent is that of the Eiffel tower in Paris France.
Africa, the map of Africa shows country boundaries, and is shaded slightly. We learn that Africa is one of the most diverse places on the planet. The picture chosen here is that of the Great Pyramid of Giza, in Egypt.
Australia, We are told the cool fact that Australia means land to the south. The picture was well chosen being that of the Sydney opera house.
North America, We learn that North America is entirely in the Northern hemisphere. I would have liked to be given a definition of hemisphere, but that didn’t happen. The picture chosen to represent this continent is Niagara Falls.
South America is home to the Andes mountain range. We are given a rare treat in the picture they chose for South America. The picture is of Angel falls, the worlds highest uninterrupted waterfall. The picture is high quality and stunning.
Finally we learn about Antarctica. Most of Antarctica is covered by ice and snow. The picture is that of Mt Erebus the second highest volcano in Antarctica. I received this kindle e-book for free, (at the time of my review it is free to everyone,) in exchange for my honest review.

Daughter: a novel, by Janice Lee

[BLACK AND WHITE EDITION] “Janice Lee is a genius.” – Eileen Myles, author of Inferno (a poet’s novel) ART: Original Holga photographs by Rochelle Ritchie Spencer SOUND: original music by Resident Anti-Hero “Daughter is quantum. There is a girl, there is an octopus, there is language -- in minimal bursts of physical intensities, their magnitude measured in intimate discretes. Janice Lee's prose is energy transfer of the elementary particles of the matter of language. There is a girl, there is an octopus, there is language, understood at the infinitesimal level. No other book ever written has entered my body and being so physically pure. There is not distance between the state of narrative and the matter of being. I turn the page of her body.” – Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Chronology of Water and Reel to Reel “Daughter, the new volume by Janice Lee, seems to rise as intuitive quantum ascent. It is praxis of the marred, of the seemingly uneven. Janice Lee understands that writing cannot exist as narrative outcome. In Daughter there is reckoning with the cosmos as phantom, as something that does and does not exist. Energies appear by means of paradox and evaporation.” – poet Will Alexander, author of The Sri Lankan Loxodrome "In Daughter, Janice Lee floods the body of a book with the body of a body, all its hybrid, constantly damaging and mending cells. From field to field among the pages we are subject to a brain-damaged, collide-o-scopic file of some internet-age Acker'd Frankenstein having lived to see god die; and yet still must go on walking in the deity's corpse... The result is a meticulous and terrifying resurrection, a glitchy screamtext passed in dire silence to the reader the way blood passes from mother into child. – Blake Butler, author of There is No Year "Lee's surgical cadences and sharp fragments work here as writing will work-to force attention to detail. Which is the unnatural order of things. – Vanessa Place, author of La Medusa and Dies: A Sentence

140 pages about a single moment.
By Brandon Jubb
Very confusing at first, Daughter explores neurological and existential philosophies and attempting to bring them into a somewhat physical existence. A girl finds an octopus in the desert. Two gods converse, maybe both comprising the Christian God, maybe one is the devil, maybe they have nothing to do with what comes to mind when we think of God. We know that they both create and they both destroy, but those are two very vague things. The octopus is potentially god. I believe the desert represents an environment devoid of necessities and the girl represents a conscious mind that has suffered trauma and took to the desert to seek solitude and purpose. Stumbling upon the unconscious mind: the octopus, and trying to find comfort somewhere in the between. Lines between physical and emotional are nonexistent, there's no clear plot movement in a physical sense but that's not to imply there's nothing happening. The books is very short and very full, making you question existence perpetually and in different manners at every page.

Interesting
By Jarrod Bouchie
The book was interesting and had some really cool moments, but it seemed gratuitously abstract and unclear. There is a section of the novel devoted to unreadable text even. Overall, I'm not mad that I bought it, but it's not my favorite.

Cerebral Philosophies with Octopus
By Tantra Bensko
Jaded Ibis Press has again brought us a new way of thinking about the world. In the case of Daughter, thinking about the world is the same thing as - the world. And it's just as mysterious, full of blank spaces, meanings given and taken away, and swirled together anyway until the meaning of meaning grows multiple arms. A woman finds a dead octopus, which may be a god, perhaps the unconscious mind, in the desert, and is compelled to investigate.

In this book, "splayed" is a color; "competence" is interchangeable with "space." Legend and dream are one, and also, they are the reality of this book's events.

Two god-entwined serpentine brothers talk with each other when the dreams of seekers make them exist, at night, which, as we all know, is the time for parties. They create, and uncreate, just as the narrator does. She claims the right to change her mind, and that she does, the fabric of each moment almost arbitrarily shifting, impossible to pin down for long. "I want a glass case, too. To display my world in. Lend me some money." Says one of the bros to the other one.

Divisions are sifted through, the glass between them shattered into mosaics washed away by the tide. Monster/god/self/mirror/surviving/murder. The very forgetting of the mother, and the mother's forgetting of the daughter, in itself feel monstrous, as do many things in this book, because they trigger some of the deepest existential feelings.

Calling this non-narrative a novel gives a new definition to linear progression, to the story of life, which is also the story of death. This book, conceptual while remaining poignant, breaks new ground for writers to plant a new kind of writing in the future, more honest without the artifice of convention. The subject matter is consciousness itself, so encountering this book is encountering pure being perhaps more than any fiction I've yet read.

"I drift from one self into another, clasping tenticular detail, mouth held into night, a liquid hand drifting. The carcass trembles and floats, qualis spectator pereo. A fusing, a brownish tint, and the shadow is fishing for octopus. Blanched and without intention, the body is quiet, our bodies are quiet, becoming the desert and encircled by the hugging hands, points with fervor, swallowing the breaths of the sea."

Holga photos by Rochelle Ritchie Spencer work well, and are printed at high quality which does them justice. They dream on the page, and continually shock with the contents of a glass jar. Nature gains a new life, and otherwise, what has been captured out of nature without means of escape, including humanity, is held in a kind of strange stillness pulsating against the edges of its caged anonymity.

Jaded Ibis's creativity with the fine art limited editions continues to astound me. Oooooooo. This one is:

"An autopsy kit containing handcrafted surgical tools and various medical artifacts, including casts of octopi body parts in apothecary bottles. The kit is an aged wooden box with a secret compartment containing the novel printed on transparent "skin" and laid upon a bed of sand. Contains flash drive with soundtrack, Monster," by Resident Anti-Hero." Is it just me, or is this kind of - orgasmic - to imagine?

Janice's previous book exploring the nature of consciousness (and Frankenstein), Kerotakis, came out in 2010 from the excellent, and WILD Dog Horn Publishing.

I highly recommend Janice Lee's books to anyone who wants to ride the wave of literature peaking with her dissection of the nature of reality, using your mind as the delighted tool.

Wonderful for the Non-Musician Leader!
By Kimberly Morris
Fantastic! Amazing! Easy to use, and SO, SO USEFUL! I can't recommend this book enough if you are a non-musician planning to facilitate any kind of a therapy or play percussion group. I have a good sense of rhythm and I'm outgoing by nature, but even if you are inhibited and a little rhythmically unsure, this book will aid you greatly. There is a CD that provides a variety of basic beats. I love the author's candor regarding when players are likely to lose interest, and how to change that up, and also the his insights into the level of concentration that the different activities require. This book is a gem. Buy it. Spread the joy.

Secret Daughter: A Novel, by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

“Moving and thought-provoking and informative and imaginative and beautifully executed. What a wonderful story!”
—Mary Jane Clark

“This book is a must for anyone touched by adoption, or India, or the delicate dynamic between adolescent girls and their mothers.”
—Sujata Massey, author of Shimura Trouble

Secret Daughter, a first novel by Shilpi Somaya Gowda, explores powerfully and poignantly the emotional terrain of motherhood, loss, identity, and love through the experiences of two families—one Indian, one American—and the child that binds them together. A masterful work set partially in the Mumbai slums so vividly portrayed in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire, Secret Daughter recalls the acclaimed novels of Kim Edwards and Thrity Umrigar, yet sparkles with the freshness of a truly exciting new literary voice.

From Publishers Weekly
Gowda's debut novel opens in a small Indian village with a young woman giving birth to a baby girl. The father intends to kill the baby (the fate of her sister born before her) but the mother, Kavita, has her spirited away to a Mumbai orphanage. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Somer, a doctor who can't bear children, is persuaded by her Indian husband, Krishnan, to adopt a child from India. Somer reluctantly agrees and they go to India where they coincidentally adopt Kavita's daughter, Asha. Somer is overwhelmed by the unfamiliar country and concerned that the child will only bond with her husband because Asha and Krishnan will look alike, they will have their ancestry in common. Kavita, still mourning her baby girl, gives birth to a son. Asha grows up in California, feeling isolated from her heritage until at college she finds a way to visit her birth country. Gowda's subject matter is compelling, but the shifting points of view weaken the story. (Mar.)

From Booklist
In her engaging debut, Gowda weaves together two compelling stories. In India in 1984, destitute Kavita secretly carries her newborn daughter to an orphanage, knowing her husband, Jasu, would do away with the baby just as he had with their firstborn daughter. In their social stratum, girls are considered worthless because they can’t perform physical labor, and their dowries are exorbitant. That same year in San Francisco, two doctors, Somer and Krishnan, she from San Diego, he from Bombay, suffer their second miscarriage and consider adoption. They adopt Asha, a 10-month-old Indian girl from a Bombay orphanage. Yes, it’s Kavita’s daughter. In alternating chapters, Gowda traces Asha’s life in America—her struggle being a minority, despite living a charmed life, and Kavita and Jasu’s hardships, including several years spent in Dharavi, Bombay’s (now Mumbai’s) infamous slum, and the realization that their son has turned to drugs. Gowda writes with compassion and uncanny perception from the points of view of Kavita, Somer, and Asha, while portraying the vibrant traditions, sights, and sounds of modern India. --Deborah Donovan

Review
This wise debut moves deftly between the child’s two mothers and cultures.

Moving and satisfying, great debut...
By Denise Crawford
This beautifully written book, Secret Daughter: A Novel, is one that will linger in my thoughts for a long time. It's a poignant story about family -- just who is "family" and what it means to be a part of one. It's also a brilliantly written testimony to mothers everywhere, for "if the mother falls, the whole family falls."

Asha (Hope) was secretly named Usha (Dawn) by her birth mother, Kavita, and is adopted from an Indian orphanage by a married American couple when she is just a year old. Kavita, already grieving the infanticide of a previous daughter in a society that prefers male infants, had made the long journey to Shanti to deliver her 3-day-old child there for safety so that her husband and his family would not also destroy this second unwanted female child. She left her daughter with only a thin silver bracelet and a wish that Asha be allowed to live, grow up, and perhaps have a better life.

Somer and Krishnan Thakkar, both doctors -- she's a pediatrician and he's a neurosurgeon -- have been unable to have a child. He is Indian and came to America to attend medical school and stayed for a better life. She married him without fully appreciating the Indian heritage and his connection to the land of his birth and to the family and traditions he left behind there. When they adopt Asha and bring her back to America to raise, little do they realize that their new beloved daughter will one day defy her parents and seek to restore their connection to their Indian relatives despite the fact that she may hurt them when she begins to trace her birth parents to find out who she is and why they gave her up for adoption.

The story moves forward in time from 1984 to 2009, and is told from the viewpoints of the three main females of the story - Somer, Kavita, and Asha. All are women who have a very strong feeling about motherhood -- and about their own mothers. In addition, each woman sees a different India and comes to appreciate the country in different ways even as they realize that "Mother India does not love all her children equally."

The story of each woman's journey to epiphany and self-realization is very moving and satisfying. I highly recommend this book.

An extraordinary debut novel from a Canadian author!
By Paul Weiss
SECRET DAUGHTER tells two heartbreaking stories, worlds apart but inseparably linked. The first is about infertility in North American woman and the extreme lengths that some hopeful mothers- and fathers-to-be will take to achieve the elusive goal of parenthood. The second graphically illustrates the demeaning treatment of women and girls in India combined with the overpowering social pressure that Indian women feel to bear sons. A common beginning breaks into two tales and then finds common ground once again at the conclusion of Shilpi Somaya Gowda's brilliant debut novel.

Kavita Merchant, having had her first child heartlessly ripped away from her and simply "disposed of" in the manner of an unwanted chattel, defies her family, her husband and her culture's social mores to spirit her second child, Usha, into an orphanage. All that Kavita can bequeath to her daughter is a small silver bangle and life itself. Separated by two oceans, thousands of miles and an entire universe of cultural differences, Somer and Krishnan Thakkar, both successful doctors in North America are struggling with Somer's inability to conceive and carry a baby to full term. All attempts at producing their own child having failed, they reluctantly decide, in homage to Krishnan's ethnicity and his family, to adopt an Indian child from an orphanage in Mumbai. SECRET DAUGHTER is the story of two families and the life of the daughter who was given the gift of a chance at a life that nobody but her mother wanted her to have.

Although Gowda's concerns and dismay over the Indian culture's preferential treatment for sons is clear enough, she does not (thankfully) indulge in heavy-handed proselytizing or hand-wringing. The story is quite shocking, compelling, absorbing and heartbreaking enough even when it is told in a relatively factual, straightforward, almost banal manner. Indeed, the effect on North American sensibilities may be more powerful and poignant for Gowda's presentation of the practice of killing unwanted daughters as simply the way it is. I'll confess to my western confusion over the matriarchs of Indian families who seem to have the bizarre ability to forget or ignore the fact that, at one point in their lives, they too were baby girls who were probably, at best, unwelcome additions to their families.

Some readers will almost certainly be disappointed at the lack of closure that the finale of the story brings to all of its characters. For my money, this open-ended conclusion keeps SECRET DAUGHTER out of the potentiall pitfall of becoming trite or sappy. Life, after all, goes on. Families and cultures are dynamic, evolving things and, as individuals, our life on this earth is all too short. Our individual contributions are only a small part of that development. If we can all agree that the murder of infant Indian girls is unacceptable in a modern world whether it is in India or North America, then I think we can also agree that Shilpi Somaya Gowda, the novel SECRET DAUGHTER and the story of little Usha's life, has made a notable contribution toward that change.

Highly recommended.

Gaps in the story
By Mamochka
I agree with the reviewer who wrote "Good Plot, Weak Characters." The idea of following two families who do not know they are connected, one who places a child for adoption because she is a girl, and one who lives halfway around the world who adopts the girl, is wonderful. Ann Hood did this to some extent in "The Red Thread," but she did not follow the Chinese mothers for the rest of their lives, as Shilpa Gowda follows Kavita. Kavita is married to Jasu, who had their first-born daughter killed. They can only afford one child, and he will do anything for a son. When Kavita produces yet another girl child, she runs away from her small village to an orphanage in Mumbai, to leave the wrong-gendered infant and spare her the fate of her older sister. Meanwhile, we meet Somer (American, Caucasian, Protestant) and Krishnan (Indian, Hindu), a young married couple living in California whose efforts to give birth have produced nothing but grief. They travel to India to adopt the little girl that Kavita placed in the orphanage, whom they call Asha (Hope).

(What comes below talks about more of the plot than you may want to know if you plan to read the book.)

It is not clear what attracts Somer and Krishnan to each other in the first place; perhaps Somer is drawn in by the exotic, foreign Krishnan, so different than anything else in her otherwise plain vanilla life. Somer has little if any interest in Krishnan's culture, so unless Krishnan is trying to escape all memories of India (and there is nothing that indicates this), it is hard to see what attracts him to Somer (yes she is bright and attractive, but can someone really love another person who has no interest in his native land/culture?). The adoption and raising of Asha hold this couple together, but when Asha leaves the nest for college and a fellowship in India, the cracks in the marriage show all too clearly.

Meanwhile, Kavita gives birth to the long-dreamed of son, Vijoy (Victory). The family's move from village to city (Mumbai, naturally) proves economically sound, but plays havoc with the traditional family bonds, as Vijoy is influenced more by friends than family, and grows up to be a drug dealer. Why his parents take his ill-gotten money when they know what he is doing is not clear to me, as Kavita is portrayed as a long-suffering saint and Jasu slowly reveals that, despite having his first child killed, he has (almost) a heart of gold.

Growing up, Asha has shown some curiousity about her birth family and birth culture This section of the book needs considerably more substance if we are to believe that Asha travels to India to stay with her father's relatives whom she does not know and winds up wholeheartedly embracing the family (and vica versa) and the culture, and of course, finding love (while writing prize-winning articles to boot). She also searches for her birth family, which is totally believable, but the resolution is wishy-washy.

One gaping omission is the role of the caste system in the life of Indian society. Does caste really play NO role in this story? How can that possibly be? Why is it never mentioned when it is so important in Hindu India? Would all of Krishnan's family truly embrace this adopted child, most likely from a lower caste than they? Would Asha really be given such an honored role at her grandfather's funeral? Is the author saying that caste is meaningless in India, or does she just wish that were true?

This could have been a very compelling story about cross-cultural and transracial adoption if it had examined more thoroughly and realistically each member of the adoption triad and the cultures that they came from.
