About the Author
Stefano Iacovella
Stefano Iacovella is a long-time GIS developer and consultant living in Rome, Italy. He also works as a GIS instructor. He has a PhD in Geology. Being a very curious person, he developed a deep knowledge of IT technologies, mainly focusing on GIS software and related standards. Starting his career as an ESRI employee, he was exposed to and became confident in proprietary GIS software, mainly the ESRI suite of products. In the last 14 years, he has been involved with open source software, integrating it with proprietary software. He loves the open source approach, and really trusts in collaboration and sharing knowledge. He strongly believes in the open source idea and constantly manages to spread it, not only in the GIS sector but also in others. He has been using GeoServer since the release of Version 1.5, configuring, deploying, and hacking it in several projects. Some of the other GFOSS projects he mainly uses and likes are GDAL/OGR, PostGIS, QGIS, and OpenLayers. Prior to this cookbook, Stefano worked on GeoServer Beginner's Guide, which covers the basics of GeoServer. When not playing with maps and geometric shapes, he loves reading about science (mainly physics and math), riding his bike, and having fun with his wife and two daughters, Alice and Luisa. Not just a cookbook, but a reference for advanced web mapping tasks
By GeoDeFelix
I have been using GeoServer for several years for my job as GIS software engineer and I learnt a lot about it and I am still learning as usual in the context of the open source world. I can say that if this book was existed when I started with GeoServer, most likely I would have struggled less, because "GeoServer CookBook" is exactly a very good cookbook for learning how to use and manage GeoServer providing recipes about common spatial activities.
Actually it is not a book for everybody who wants to understand the geospatial or web mapping world from the scratch, although it could be used from anyone which needs support for mapping using GeoServer, I deem that the ideal audience for it would be the advanced users or developers/analysts with a smattering of GIS and OGC standards (Open Geospatial Consortium).
The author wrote the book making it as a reference guide for advanced tasks from which to take inspiration for the own mapping activities.
The book could come out as usuful even for experienced Geo-developers since it allows to discover amazing and not so commonly-used modules of GeoServer.
Among the topics covered I would point up the capabilities of GDAL used by GeoServer, especially into the raster formats discussion, the geoprocessing valuable module explained very well, the REST interface implemented by GeoServer and a couple of chapters regarding the optimization of GeoServer for production purposes.
In the last, but not least, I liked even the appendix, usually not considered so gripping, about OGC for ESRI Professionals where the author briefly focuses on the difference publishing OGC web services with ArcGIS and GeoServer, very usuful for lovers of ESRI world for understanding GeoServer.
Just for keeping consistency, in the book it has been largely used software open source like Openlayers, PostGIS, QGIS and gdal tools.
In conclusion, I consider this book could be very useful for a wide range of people which have familiarity with web mapping matters or are very experienced web mapping developers.
Have an exciting reading!

Great recipes and how to's
By Pat
GeoServer Cookbook is a great desktop reference with many recipes for integrating GeoServer with other open source software such as QGIS, PostGIS, and GDAL tools. This book is designed for the intermediate to advanced developer and assumes working knowledge of GeoServer, PostGIS and GDAL. Each chapter has "How to do it" and "How it works" sections with supporting code files that make it useful for even the beginner to start learning about GeoServer.
Being a beginner myself, I found several topics to be most helpful. Chapter 1 contains easy to follow steps on creating a SQL view and creating a parametric view using PostGIS and GeoServer. Chapter 2's, getting coverages in different formats, explains how to use QGIS to connect to GeoServer and transform raster layers into various formats. It also describes how to install GDAL libraries on the server and add GDAL formats. Chapter 3 steps you through installing and enabling the CSS modules for styling. You can create a simple polygon style, add filters to your style, and add labels with CSS.
The following chapters are more advanced. Chapter 4 contains information on Geoprocessing. Chapters 5, 6, and 8 describe how to setup advanced configurations, automate GeoServer configurations with REST, and then monitor and tune GeoServer. Chapter 7 on advanced visualizations explains how to add time to WMS maps and creatively use transparency. The Appendix gives a brief outline of the differences between ArcGIS for Server and GeoServer, as well as highlighting the importance of OGC standards.
Although this book is designed for the more advanced user, several chapters are very helpful to the novice developer.

A fantastic set of recipes to exploit the power and potential of GeoServer
By Colin Henderson
There is a lot of information out there on how to use GeoServer - whether it is the excellent GeoServer documentation, online blog posts, or technical books. However, there are few resources available simply showing you how to get stuff done - until now!
This book contains a great set of recipes that are clearly written and easy to follow. Each one guides you through the necessary steps to accomplish the task and then provides a good description of the theory and reasoning behind it. From working with vector and raster data through to advanced visualisation techniques, this book contains recipes for most use cases.
This is a great reference book for anyone serious about doing more with GeoServer than simply serving maps, whether you are a beginner or advanced user you will find something useful within the covers of this book.
