About the Author

Patricia has earned her status as a preeminent tastemaker. She received her Master’s Degree from George Washington University, where she lectured on Art History. She was a highly-successful art advisor who also amassed her own art collection and has served on the board of the New York Historical Society and other institutions. In addition to being an academic and a philanthropist, she has done a life-long tour-of-duty at the top of the social ladder in Washington, D.C., Oyster Bay, and on Manhattan’s storied Fifth Avenue, where she observed--and ultimately dictated--the modern-day rules of civility. Finally, A Guide to Good Living

If you like the idea of striving to be a proper yet modern lady, then this book is for you! There are many etiquette guides in print and online, but what sets Altschul's book apart is that she provides the "why" behind why you should or should not do certain things. There is absolutely no hint of our mothers' oft quoted, "Because I told you so" form of explanation. Altschul succinctly lays it on the line for her readers. Take for instance, she advises that, "...you should accept your uniqueness and not try to follow fashion or trends, because they can backfire and make you look ridiculous." She will then follow her advice with a real-life faus pas from her own past! Her wise maternal tone along with her ability of laughing at her own past mistakes make for a very enjoyable reading experience. More than anything, Altschul left me feeling with a sense of relief that I am on the right track when it comes to managing my career, maintaining a household, caring for myself, and entertaining friends and family. My hope is that she will consider creating an expanded, coffee-table book with full-color pictures of her fabulous life and surroundings.

Tells it like it is! Love it!

Discovered Patricia on "Southern Charm" and had to read this book. So refreshing to hear someone tell the truth even if it is considered "unpopular and NOT politically correct (PC)." She covers so much in this book...who she is & where she came from (and SO much more!)...I'm glad...because I wanted to know. There are a few recipes in there, but it is NOT a recipe book...it is way beyond that. One of the best points that she repeatedly makes in the book is that GOOD MANNERS cost nothing...anyone can be well mannered...and as a 52 year old proud southern woman (born in Florida) is it amazing to me how many people in today's world have horrible manners and are not ashamed to flaunt them. Plus, ladies...there are many good tips in there about how to attract the right mate...stop...making yourselves so available & "strumpet like"...have some respect for yourself and your body...stop letting it all hang out and bed hopping...stop cussing, etc. Women have "dumbed" themselves down...time to rise back up! I also liked how Patricia has "definition bubbles" in the book...some words I knew & some I did not. It was great that she shares some of her favorite things that she buys...I would immediately search for them online...of course...some I can't afford, but I can afford her favorite scented candle and soap...can wait to get them in the mail! She is refreshingly honest and admits her mistakes about love and life. Great read...I could not put it down...BRAVO!!!

Jane D. Espinoza-Alvarado is a Professor at the International Academy of Design Online and a computer-aided design consultant to the fashion and sewn products industry. Her travels take her nationwide and internationally to help companies automate and use CAD systems more efficiently. She has directed fashion shows, created curriculums and taught courses including drawing, sewing, automated patternmaking and fashion show production at several universities. Her extensive industry, consulting, and classroom experience paired with her career experience at Gerber Technology give her a unique position when training students, faculty, or design professionals on CAD software.

Step By Step Through Gerber functions

This is a very basic, workbook style walk through all the funtions of Gerber, menu by menu. The book explains the terms used by Gerber and helps to understand the often arcane thought process by which Gerber's functions are organized. Great for beginners.

About the Author
Dr. Ashar completed his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He then obtained his medical degree from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. Following Residency and Chief Residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland, he joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Ashar has been very active in medical education. He currently serves as the Director of the Advanced Medicine Clerkship (Medicine Subinternship), as a core faculty member of the Medical School's Colleges system, and as a firm faculty member for the Johns Hopkins Osler Medicine residency program. He is on the Johns Hopkins Medical Student Admissions Committee and Continuing Medical Education Committee. He directs the Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine Board Review Course and is a founding editor of the Johns Hopkins Board Review Book. Dr. Ashar's clinical and research interests revolve around complementary and alternative medicine, preventive medicine, anemia, and medical education. Professionally, he is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Past-President of the Mid-Atlantic Society of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Miller graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology from The Ohio State University. She earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and took her internship and residency on the Osler Medical Service at Johns Hopkins. After serving as an Assistant Chief of Service (chief resident), she joined the faculty and is now an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Miller has been very active in medical education. She currently serves as an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. She directs the Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine Board Review Course and is a founding editor of the Johns Hopkins Board Review Book. Recently, she completed her M.B.A. at Johns Hopkins and serves as Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations for the Department of Medicine. In this capacity, she works to improve the delivery of care for patients at the institution. Dr. Miller’s clinical and research interests revolve around women’s health, medical education, and quality improvement. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and recent past Treasurer for the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Good overall, with caveats:

Good review overall. However there are too many typos that are distracting when one is trying to go through a lot of info within a short period. Also, too many errors in listed answers on the expert consult questions. I'd give 3.5 stars but hate to detract from the vast good work put into this course.

tables not easy to view

Kindle version has some formatting issues, such as bullet points which don't line up well (hard to tell what points go under which heading), tables not easy to view. Also, there are a few minor errors and discrepancies between information in MKSAP and this book. All in all, I thought it was useful, but probably better to get the print version.

Mathematics has an amazingly long and rich history, it has been practised in every society and culture, with written records reaching back in some cases as far as four thousand years. This book will focus on just a small part of the story, in a sense the most recent chapter of it: the mathematics of western Europe from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Each chapter will focus on a particular topic and outline its history with the provision of facsimiles of primary source material along with explanatory notes and modern interpretations. Almost every source is given in its original form, not just in the language in which it was first written, but as far as practicable in the layout and typeface in which it was read by contemporaries. This book is designed to provide mathematics undergraduates with some historical background to the material that is now taught universally to students in their final years at school and the first years at college or university: the core subjects of calculus, analysis, and abstract algebra, along with others such as mechanics, probability, and number theory. All of these evolved into their present form in a relatively limited area of western Europe from the mid sixteenth century onwards, and it is there that we find the major writings that relate in a recognizable way to contemporary mathematics.

Yet another good but not great sourcebook

Fresh translations of important mathematical texts are of course always a welcome and valuable resource, but this book can hardly be said to be superior to previous sourcebooks. The selections at times seem quite arbitrary and the editor's introductions are brief and superficial (incidentally, they are also typeset in a larger font size than the actual translations, which I find rather tasteless).

As an illustration of the general shortcomings of the book, I am going to consider the selection from Johann Bernoulli on the use of complex numbers in integration (pp. 468-472). Bernoulli's text itself is a very dry and factual list of rules for transforming integrals using complex substitutions. In particular, it includes the partial fraction decomposition of dx/(1+x^2) into "imaginary logarithmic differentials" (as Bernoulli calls them), i.e., in effect, the integration

arctan(x) = integral of dx/(1+x^2) = integral of (1/2)/(x+i)-(1/2)/(x-i) dx = (1/2)log(x+i/x-i)

"Such transformations were extremely helpful" (p. 468), claims the editor's introduction without further discussion. Such an attitude, I think, undermines the very purpose of a sourcebook, namely to see substantial mathematics with your own eyes instead of being fed vague and unsubstantiated and uncheckable assertions by some historian about which ideas were "extremely helpful." The novelist's adage "show, don't tell" should be an axiom for historians as well---above all for all sourcebook editors. Sadly, in the present case, it is not. Inquisitive readers will suffer accordingly. As later selections in this book illustrates, even the most rudimentary facts about the theory of complex integration were not understood until over a century later. So, then, how exactly was Bernoulli's algebraic hocus-pocus supposed to be "extremely helpful"? What did the logarithm of an imaginary number even mean at this time, if in fact it was a meaningful concept at all?

All of these concerns could have been addressed in a much more satisfactory manner by including Bernoulli's main application of his idea rather than this cryptic table of hocus-pocus "transformations". In 1712 Bernoulli wrote a short and beautiful paper on how to put his imaginary formula to "real" use, namely for finding multiple-angle formulas for tan(a). If we let y=tan(na) and x=tan(a) then arctan(y)=na=narctan(x), so by the above formula for the arctangent we get log(y+i/y-i) = log(x+i/x-i)^n. Complex logarithms may be mysterious but it does not take too much courage to "cancel the log's" in this equation, giving (y+i)(x-i)^n=(x+i)^n(y-i), which is an algebraic relationship between y=tan(na) and x=tan(a), as sought. Bernoulli admits this formula contains "quantitates imaginarias ... quae per se sunt impossibilia"---imaginary quantities which are by themselves impossible. But this, he says, is not a problem since they "in casu quolibet particulari evanescunt"---vanish in any particular case. For example, if n=3 the formula reduces to tan(3a)=(6*tan(a)-2*tan^3(a))/(1-3*tan^2(a). Reducing tan(na) to tan(a) is a hard problem. Bernoulli himself had previously tackled the problem using power series, but now he is quite proud to have carried out the derivation "sine serierum auxilio"---without the help of series. One benefit of this approach, he notes, is that it shows that the relationship is "semper algebraicum"---always algebraic---which is not clear from a series approach. Apparently, he considered working with "impossible quantities" a small price to pay for this added insight and simplicity. (I learned of this paper of Bernoulli's from Stillwell's excellent book, Mathematics and Its History, which I recommend far more highly than any sourcebook for readers who want a "show, don't tell" history of mathematics.)

I was truly disappointed in this book. I bought it so that I could understand Ayurveda, but this writter discounts the true principles. He refers to Vata, Pita and Kapha as Body Types A,B and C. I think he should call it by the proper names and not try to take shortcuts. It is not a well written book on the subject. If you are interested in Ayurveda, I highly recommend Deepak Chopra's "Perfect Health". Not only does Chopra cover the topic completely, his book is inspiring. Perfect Balance is unrealistic. It recommends that people take teaspoons of spices and herbs daily. While the true way of following Ayurveda is to cook with the spices and herbs in the food. I do not recommend this book. It has some helpful information, but not enough. Why read more then one book on the subject? Deepak Chopra's book covers it all and he also has a website that offers Ayurveda products.

About the Author
Frank Marra worked at the Staten Island Landfill World Trade Center Recovery Site from September 2001 until February 2002, an experience that served as inspiration for From Landfill to Hallowed Ground: The Largest Crime Scene in America. His law enforcement career included seventeen years with the New York City Police Department and the rank of Detective and then Lieutenant. He was born in Staten Island, New York, and currently resides in Millstone, New Jersey, with his wife Laura and three sons, Anthony, Dominic, and Frank. Maria Bellia Abbate, inspired by Frank's experiences at the Recovery Site, was eager to assist in helping to put all his stories and memories together to create From Landfill to Hallowed Ground. Currently she is a teacher in Staten Island. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Maria lives in Millstone, New Jersey, with her husband Michael and her three children, Alexa, Michael, and Delilah.

A vivid reminder

A well written account of the aftermath and recovery operation following 9/11. Graphic in parts and enlightening on something I was unaware of, it tells the sad personal account of one mans experiences helping search, identify and eventually oversee some of the rubble that remained of the twin towers. I thought this would be a tough emotional read, but it was so factual this for me while very sad was not upsetting. Thank you for sharing your experiences, these memories need to be preserved to remind future generations of the horror of 9/11. I also hope this brought some healing and closure of its own to the authors and will comfort families of the victims.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very informative. I had the opportunity to visit Ground Zero and the Landfill with my brother in law then
Chief Anthony Marra shortly after 9/11. I learned so much more information from the book. My favorite chapter is the Red Cross Nurse. It is an interesting read and I highly recommend it.

The debris from the collapse of the Twin Towers was barged to the Staten Island Landfill, and Det. Marra was one of those assigned to go through it. In this book he chronicles his experiences sifting through the debris and cataloging the vehicles, some crushed and some intact. The subject is fascinating and humbling but the book fell short of my expectations.

There is a lot of general information but not enough anecdotes. It would have been a much better book if Marra had spoken with more people who also worked the Landfill. The book would benefit from more stories like that of the woman who came to Staten Island with her children to sit in her late husband's car. There aren't enough meaningful passages like that one. The photographs are generic and add nothing.

These seem like paltry quibbles in light of Marra's service to NY and the world, but it's an expensive book for what you get. Thank you, sir, for your service, and for giving us a glimpse of what it was like working the Staten Island Landfill. I would have liked to know a lot more.
